I don't think trading Bryant for Trout helps or hurts either team, really. It just reallocates extremely valuable assets.

Anyone with ESPN Insider willing to share what they say Cubs would have to give up for Sale? Just curious.

Sale for Schwarber, Hendricks, Happ and Candelario.

hard pass

I'm not saying I or the Cubs would do it but that seems close to the value the Sox are willing to give him up for.

The more you know: Hendricks and Sale have nearly identical ERAs since the beginning of 2015, 3.33 to 3.31.

You're probably NSBB's smartest baseball mind. This being said, I don't think I have to tell you that's just silly.

I don't think he's calling them equals. Just saying their production has been.

yeah, i get that. still no way i would give up that value for sale. i mean, we already have one psycho on the team so you have to consider that, too

Hopefully not a repost, was just on MLB.com and saw:

http://m.mlb.com/news/article/192042962/trade-notes-cubs-as-talk-josh-reddick/

The Cubs have had talks with the Oakland A's about right fielder Josh Reddick, according to sources. Along with Cincinnati's Jay Bruce and Colorado's Carlos Gonzalez, Reddick is on a short list of prominent outfield bats who could be dealt prior to Monday's non-waiver Trade Deadline.

Make it happen, Jed!

Oh and still land a SP

I don't think it's necessarily saying the Cubs are talking about Bruce or Cargo just that those guys plus Reddick, who the Cubs are talking to, are guys expected to be shopped

Cubs predicted to grab Reddick for Pierce Johnson and Jake Stinnett. If that's all it takes, I'd have done it as soon as it was on the table.

Replace Schwarber with Soler OR Happ with any prospect other than Jimenez, and it would be hard to pass.

I know I haven't been in favor of trading for Reddick. But if he's going to be free, yeah, sure, why not?

Well, I always loved you, Jorge! When they replaced you with Reddick, I said it was a mistake, even for the remainder of this season. They didn't listen to me. But I tried to convince them, Jorge. I tried. Edited by muntjack

Yeah if that's all it takes I'd absolutely do it.

I'd like to see them make a run at a starter as well, but ... considering the rumored costs of some of the mediocre arms out there (like Jeremy Hellickson), it's hard to see something coming together.

If that's all it costs for Reddick, you make the trade right away. I'd be hard pressed to buying that's all it would cost for Reddick, but who knows.

Much as I would like to add Sale, Sale alone doesn't push us over any hump, and stripping the team's young core even more makes little sense.

As for the Rays starter, I'm on the record as preferring Smyly. Archer's going to cost the moon to get back, I don't love Moore enough ... and Odorizzi doesn't excite me.

At the end of the day, I think any talks they have now are probably laying the groundwork for the offseason.

To be clear, I'm comparing Smyly to Odorizzi and Moore only, not Archer.

Yes, if the medicals are bad, then you pass on it. Assuming they are okay ...

I guess we can still say Moore has a higher ceiling than Smyly, with the better fastball, but I like Smyly's 4 pitch mix better, and neither guy has logged a ton of innings.

Odorizzi ... just have never loved him. A stable workhorse mid-end of the rotation type.

THis is predicated on the idea that Smyly would be relatively cheaper. IF he isn't, then no.

I'm also curious about the idea of Smyly going back to the 2-seamer some, now that he has a firm grasp on how to attack hitters. A lot of the Rays pitchers give up the long ball as they focus on attacking with the 4-seamer. I could be thinking about the wrong guy, but I thought Smyly had a decent 2-seamer once, and I just wonder if there's something there to bring down the HR's a bit.

A bit late on the news ... but just saw that a mystery team was in on Lucroy and I really do wonder if that could be the Cubs. Hard to see us landing him after making 2 deals ... but assuming adding an impact SP doesn't happen, adding a bat to further improve our chances makes sense, and compared to an impact arm, we probably have the pieces left to make a deal if they like some of our guys.

My guess is that Stearns pulls the trigger on the best prospect/young talent he can get ... gotta think the Indians might head that conversation if they decide the pen upgrades are too costly.

I just can't see that happening with what the rumored asking price has been. I think the FO is completely fine going with Contreras/Ross/Montero the rest of the year and then Contreras/Montero/whatever they can get out of Schwarber back there.

What was the appeal of Smyly again? He's lefty and he's cheap, beyond that all I have in my head is lots of HRs, shoulder issues, and not many innings.

Smyly has an elite k%-bb%. Homers have hurt him this season but I would take him in a heartbeat.

I'd be a little upset if Wade Davis + Kennedy's contract fetches a similar return as Chapman to the Cubs.

For our team I would just rather have the rental. Ian Kennedy getting paid 16 million still in 2020 when he's not very good in 2016 doesn't seem fun.

Holy hell I didn't look up his deal before posting but I never assumed he would be under contract for 4 more seasons after this one. Ok that changes my mind a bit.
