The Cubs absolutely have the pieces to get Archer without sabotaging their current roster or minor league system. If the Rays actually asked for Yelich and Realmuto in return for Moore or Odorizzi though, it would appear that the Rays are particularly divorced from reality and so it might not matter.

Where's Garza when you need him?

Anybody think we could put together an acceptable package for Archer?

There isn't a player in baseball we couldn't conceivably put a package together for

Apparently the Rangers are deep in talks to get Vince Velazquez from the Phillies. They lost out on Cashner so they're gonna empty the farm now.

I don't think its possible to lose out by not acquiring Cashner.

I would agree, especially considering what the Marlins gave up.

But a young cost-controlled starter having a solid season? Price tag gonna be huge.

Yeah, it will. Personally, that's a deal I'd wait til the winter to do, if I'm Texas. I doubt he's got enough innings left to last into the playoffs.

Isn't Velazquez the guy who died like 15 pitches into a start against us in Philly?

On his annual non-DL stint.

Sounds like Nats won't move him, but I'd be interested in the Cubs inserting themselves into that deal and sending Schwarber to the Yanks for Giolito.

STOP. TRYING. TO. TRADE. SCWHARBER.

This goes for everyone.

Some morning updates:

Pirates gauging interest in Melancon

Yankees gauging interest in McCann

Dodgers trying to get Jay Bruce and may trade Puig separately

Rich Hill won't make his next start

Derek Norris likely to be traded

Gonna be a wild couple days til the deadline. It's also still throwing me off that the deadline is now Aug. 1.

I suppose it's not that far fetched. Melancon has nowhere near the stuff of Chapman, but he doesn't have the baggage either. I suppose it all depends on who's in the market for a closer and how bad they want one.

I didn't even know that the deadline was Aug. 1. But yeah, it could be wild. As of now, there are roughly 18 teams that should considered contenders to some degree-

The 6 1st place teams, 4 wild card leaders, and 8 more that are within 5 games of their division and/or a Wild Card. With this being said, and the lofty prices paid for Chapman and Cashner, it really is a sellers market.

Some tweets this morning from Marc Topkin (Tampa Bay Times) that Cubs are in pursuit of a Rays starter.

Not against it, but why should we give up assets to acquire someone who might be our 4 or 5 starter and won't pitch in the postseason?

we also need pitchers in 2017 and 2018. if now is when they are being sold, now is a time we might buy them.

A - because there are years beyond this one

B - depends which rays starter, as far as that 4th or 5th thing goes
