Cashner and Rea to the Marlins from SD.

Can someone explain the reason Andrew Cashner is an in demand trade target? He had a couple of pretty damn good seasons in 2013 and 2014 but has been worth -1.2 wins (BR) since the start of 2015. This year he has a 4.76 ERA, an even higher FIP of 4.94 and has had issues staying healthy which has been something that's plagued him in the past. And for a cheap ass org like the Marlins, he doesn't even have much control as he's in his 2nd to last arb year.

Maybe the Marlins see something they can fix in him or they are gambling that he will put it together or maybe the return to SD is not much.

Its because he's available. There aren't many that truly are.

And the ask from the Rays must have influenced the Marlins. FFS, that's a horsefeathers ton for Cashner and Rea.

What a package for the Padres. Geez. Cashner, Rea for 2 top prospects, a buy-low starter and an elite reliever who will be back from TJ surgery next season. I'm sure this makes the Phillies happy about a Hellickson trade and really sets the market for starters now.

Little strange how little we are hearing about the Cubs. Obviously they've made a big move and it may be the only big move. Or maybe the Cubs are flying under the radar and/or waiting a little closer to Monday to go full throttle. I'm sure the FO would be fine with standing pat if it comes down to that but if Theo's history as a buyer is any indication (other than last year), he's probably exploring every possibility and option to make the team better.

I dunno, they've already traded for 2 relievers, which has the obvious effect of fixing the bullpen but also eating up roster spots. So while they could play at the top of the SP market, that likely has insane prices, and now playing on the lower end or getting a guy as a possibility for the 2017 rotation becomes a bit more difficult if it also means doing something like releasing Grimm to make room. On the position player side I've always been skeptical, today's move illustrates that they have more MLB caliber players than roster spots. More likely that they're keeping tabs on outfielders in case they send Soler and/or Almora in a different deal, which now looks less likely than ever.

Jim Duquette on MLBN right now thinks we are going to get Reddick. Didn't name names or say anything was particularly close, just thinks it will happen.

This reliever market is something else:

The flip side of this market is that a Gleyber Torres from the Cubs isn't close to as tough a pill as Giolito to the Nats. Theo set the market, and if you want to keep up you'd better be willing to pay big.

Bowden just tweeted that the Nats won't give up Giolito.

Yeah I didn't think he would. I would guess the Nats source was Dusty "dude screw rookies I need a vet" Baker

Sounds like Nats won't move him, but I'd be interested in the Cubs inserting themselves into that deal and sending Schwarber to the Yanks for Giolito.

Good God no.

I mean it's not happening, so it's not really worth discussing, but I think if you can get a long term starting pitching asset with TOR potential without hurting this year's team, you have to do it.

It kinda feels like Torres getting sat down before getting traded was the first time that trade-specific benching(not being pulled from a game, but absence from the starting lineup) has ever come to fruition. Tough to believe that'll be a leading indicator again.
