People have to understand that the playoffs are pretty much 11 coin flips in a row.

You can play around it a little bit, increase your coin flips a couple percentage points here and there, but you're never going to get overwhelming odds.

So your job is to make the playoffs as frequently as possible (and a secondary goal is to have the best seeding, and a tertiary goal is having a couple good front line starters, who tip the scales slightly more than any other factor on a team). So, that being the case, try to make the playoffs this year, but don't do it at the expense of future chances.

It's pretty simple.

Even with punctuation, I'm not sure that would make any sense.

It had an exclamation point. That didn't clear it up for you, eh?

dont know how many times i gotta say this but english is my 2nd language

But you used to use punctuation....did you forget how?

No I get it. I don't think we are going to make the playoffs and even if we do, I don't feel this team would be successful in the playoffs.

Except you don't, hence the words that followed that sentence.

I'm not arguing that we shouldn't at least try to improve this season by adding a few pieces. I just don't want to give up Baez unless we get someone with equal potential and control. Baez might be a bust but he might also be a future All-Star 2B who hits 30 HR a year. Would hate to give up the possibility of years of that for an average end of the rotation pitcher.

DO NOT TRADE BAEZ. He needs another look in the bigs. His swing adjustments appear to have made a critical difference.

I want a dynasty made up of ALL our badass young hitters. I want to the chance to see KB, Rizz, Soler, Russell, Schwarber, AND Baez all mashing at the same time and to see how terrifying that would be for opposing pitchers.

A fifth starter can surely be found without giving up one of our young studs, especially in a year where we aren't equipped for a playoff run anyways. If we were vying for the division, perhaps I would be reacting differently. Hopefully Theo is really drilling in on a "Castro just needs a change of scenery" strategy.

That lineup (minus Baez) is striking fear in no one at present

That's my whole point. I want to see what it would be like if they are all clicking at the same time, maybe a year or two from now. This year they aren't all clicking for a variety of issues.

Yeah, and if doing nothing doesn't get it done by 2017, we can always start trying then. 2018 was always the year.

As long as the cubs dont give up

Russell

Bryant

Rizzo

Schwarber

Baez

I dont care who they trade if they make the team better for this year and next year.

I think there tends to be more good outfielder FA than infielders

I don't want to give up Baez in this trade, either, mind you...but you think Tyson Ross is an "average end of the rotation pitcher?"

I think an obvious problem is that no one outside of Cub fans assigns much value to Castro at this point - he's likely bordering on a salary dump. Especially with the Pads desperate to cut payroll, that's a big issue.

Maybe we can figure something out to get Benoit from SD. He's still throwing hard despite his age, and he's been terrific the last two years. Ross and Benoit for Castro, Underwood and McKinney might be realistic if we take Gyarko.

what kind of control would we have over Ross? What's his contract like? I honestly don't know. And I'm on my phone at a boring law conference, so I don't want to screw around on Google trying to find out. I'm sure you know, so tell me.

Years of cheap control over Baez isn't something I want to give up lightly.

@JeffPassan

Shockingly, Padres one of just five teams that haven't made a trade with deadline in 3 1/2 hours. Others: Cubs, White Sox, Twins, D'Backs.

Ross is controllable through 2018.

More on Kimbrel: Now told #Yankees’ talks for him broke down yesterday and have not revived today. #Marlins’ Capps an option, as others say.

Moving Castro makes sense from a baseball and a business perspective if Baez hits .220. But the parallel between Lou Brock at the 1964 deadline and Castro today makes me weary from a totally irrational standpoint.

Lou Brock had 7 seasons where he had more WAR than Castro has ever had through year 6. I think we're ok.

Carassco would be an excellent pickup for Cubs rotation. Solid #3 with arrow pointing up. Could cost them Baez.

yes, he just referred to carrasco as a #3

hmm...the parallel between the cubs trading a pile of garbage for arrieta makes me want to DO ALL THE TRADES.
