If he keeps hitting now like he did in April and May he blows Coghlan out of the water.

That's overstating it. Even if he plays like he did in May (his April was good but not stellar), we're not talking about a huge WAR difference over the course of two months. It's just not a huge position of need.

If he came with another year or two of control, that would be a much different story.

I really don't know how to feel about Baez, but I THINK I'd be OK with moving him for Ross. The new swing/lower body adjustment is cool, but we're still looking at a K rate north of 30% and a sub 10% BB rate in the Majors. Can anyone really survive and be good with that? If someone can, it's a power hitting middle infielder, I guess. But then we look at what poor discipline has done to Soler's raw power. I don't know, man, I just go back and forth with Javy.

I'm not sure what we'd do with Castro's spot if Baez were to be traded. I think he can bounce back in 2016, but he's most likely toast for this season.

For as much as I hate pitchers and Ross scares me, I think I'd be fine giving up Baez as the main piece in a Ross-Kimbrel deal. If it really came down to include Baez or there is no deal

Well, if he is back to hitting like he has in the past, including earlier this year, it would make a pretty big difference over what Coghlan is likely to do. Coghlan is solid; when Upton is hitting he's sexy.

But hey, it's not happening. Fret not.

We don't really know what we're looking at in the majors until we see how his adjustments work out at the big league level.

But that's the gamble, of course. If the Cubs bring him up and he stinks even with the adjustments, he loses a lot more trade value. If he were to be included in a trade now, I'd like to see it maximized by expanding it to include more players than just he and Ross.

Ehhh, I think we can state the 30+%, sub 10% stuff with confidence. I was being generous with 30%; the hope is that he's not too far over that.

@JeffPassan: Sources: Astros-Padres believed to be working on "something big." They've talked Tyson Ross and Craig Kimbrel. San Diego could use a CF.

Here's to hoping its a last ditch scare tactic from SD.

Sources say Astros and Padres are talking. Says one: “We’re not close to anything.”

I would conjecture that this is probably a leverage play by SD.

They want Baez, Cubs are pushing Castro.

Wasn't this basically the same exact thing said about the Cubs and Padres as well?

[expletive], scratch that; if the 'Stros are offering a RH OF, no way can the Cubs compete with that. Marisnick FTW.

See I think that deal sucks and I'd be marginially pissed if that's the deal and the Cubs didn't top it. But I doubt that's the full deal.

Marisnick is pretty terrible, no?

Sarcasm Re: Preller's affinity for RH OFs. The only thing Marisnick has on Venable is youth (not that that is a small matter).

Uh yeah .275 OBP and .5 WAR

Marisnick is hardly a marquee name, but the big advantage he has over Castro is salary. Both are subpar offensive players, but Castro is both worse this year and has at times been better than Marisnick. If they both made the same money the Pads would probably prefer Castro, but as is - who knows?

Appel vs. Edwards is another tough one. They were rated roughly equally going into the season. Appel has flat-out struggled. Edwards had shoulder problems, got shifted to the pen and has a hideous walk rate - along with the 2nd-best OBA in the minors and a ton of Ks. Again, hard to say who the Pads would value higher here.

On balance, I think a Cubs offer of Edwards, Castro and either Underwood or McKinney - certainly if both - would win out. But they might have to either pay half of Castro's remaining contract or take Gyarko.

If it's just a trade for Ross, I'd have to imagine it would be Baez and not Castro or a prospect package with neither.

I can't imagine the Padres trading Ross AND adding payroll in the process

Edit: or do what Deeg said above and pay some of Castro's salary.

You all don’t know anything about baseball. All you guys did was [expletive] on Rafael Soriano, and what does he do? 2 wins in 6 appearances. That’s nearly 35%! that’s nearly 40%! And you all act like he’s garbage. That’s nearly 50%!

People here also [expletive] on Edwin Jackson!!! he threw a no hitter in the major baseball! On 168 pitches. Do you know how much talent that takes. The skill to execute 168 pitches for a no hitter! that’s nearly 200!
