I don't know what a really big deal with SD would be if Kimbrel isn't in it. Ross and Upton sure isn't it.

I mean, it's a semantical nitpick, but Ross and Upton are a pair of 3+ win players, and Ross is controlled for several years. It'd take a decent size quality and quantity from the Cubs to get them. That seems pretty 'big' to me.

That said, I'd prefer Ross/Kimbrel to Ross/Upton, myself.

Holy crap, that guy thinks Ross and Upton wouldn't be big?

It would be substantial, sure. But in the context of some kind of brewing blockbuster no, I don't think it's close. Even if you don't believe Ross' elbow is a grenade with the pin pulled, he's a mid-rotation starter, not a #1 or even a #2. And Upton, while he's not as bad as he has been the last two months (which is almost Castro bad) he's not an elite bat. He's also a rental - exactly the sort of player Theo said he wasn't going to pay big for. This isn't the sort of big deal you'd even consider including Baez in.

You're probably thinking of Ross Ohlendorf and Melvin Upton. No, I don't think I'd give up Javy for those two guys. But Tyson Ross and Justin Upton are good. And I'd drive Javy and 3 of his closest friends to the airport myself if we could get them.

why are you guys so down on haren? he'd be a huge improvement, and would cost less

4.57 FIP and 4.54 xFIP, on pace for about 0.7 fWAR.

He technically meets the requirements of "improve the rotation," but in the most ridiculously minimal way possible.

I dunno, I see a guy with a 1.1 WHIP and a 1.4 WAR and I compare that to the bums we've been throwing out there and....very simple upgrade to me if he's cheap

of course Id rather have someone else, but not if the cost isnt right

he's been worth half a win in 123 innings

4.53 FIP and 4.55 xFIP

huge improvement over anything is probably an overstatement

he is basically one of the bums we've been throwing out there and that whip (and i'm assuming that ERA based bWAR) are smoke and mirrors

high FIP terrifies me with the guys we're playing on defense currently, admittedly

but I stick with the main argument. cheaper, still an upgrade. I'd rather give up two A-ball guys for Haren than Baez for Ross

I just dont want to see dallas beeler again man.

Hey, speaking of FA to be OF, Upton could also be in play in a 'big' deal.

Now you're just being cruel.

someone mentioned it...like a writer

but hasn't he been awful lately?

Justin's been awesome lately.

If by lately you mean two of the last three games, sure. He's been terrible this month.

Don't caaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrre. He's good again and deliciously young.

He's a rental who has been terrible pretty much all year. It's very premature to say he's "good again" (though he might be). I'd take him for sure, but I wouldn't give up much of anything. Maybe as an addition to a Ross trade.

ok THAT might be an overstatement for a guy with 2.1 fWAR in 95 games

He hasn't been terrible all year; he's a 2.1 fWAR player a 3.1 rWAR player. He was fantastic in April and May, stunk in June, nursed a sore oblique and a retardedly low BABIP for much of July and now he's hitting again.

Plus I want them to get a rental just to see all of the complacent Cubs fans lose their collective [expletive].

how the hell do you call Upton "terrible all year"? Are you high?

Okay, he's been terrible for a while. He had a decent April, a good May, and he's been bad since. And he's a rental who has been rumored to not want to play for the Cubs, and a corner OF (probably a marginal upgrade over Coghlan over 2-3 months if he plays well), which we're not really in the market for.

Again, I'd take him with the hope he plays like his pre-2015 self, but it shouldn't be a priority.

He IS basically playing like his "pre-2015 self," or maybe even better; BR has him on track to have his most valuable year since 2011. Fangraphs has him at 3.0 WAR in 2013 and 4.0 last year; right now he's 2.1.

June was a crappy month, but it happens; Rizzo is hopefully snapping out of his super shitty these last couple of games or so. Upton was dealing with soreness and a terrible BABIP in July just through the ASB and seems to have snapped out of it.

His July has been markedly worse than his June. Sure, some of that can be chalked up to babip and the injury, but it hasn't been a good run the past couple of months. I'd want to see more an a good series before I declare him "fixed".

But the bigger issue is that corner OF isn't on the top of the priority list, no should it be. Coghlan has been a 2 WAR player, too. Giving up much to potentially eke out an extra ~1 WAR over the rest of the season seems like a waste of resources when there are bigger fish to fry. Like I said, if Preller want to tack Upton onto a Ross deal for a mid-level prospect or two, great. If the ask is significant at all, you have to pass.

If he keeps hitting now like he did in April and May he blows Coghlan out of the water. I'd prefer them to take the chance if he's available (though I doubt he is for anything the FO is willing to give up).
