If the asking price is super high on Kimbrel, Benoit is a solid arm still.....Peripherals down this year though, but in last year of his deal. If money is truly tight, allocating that much for a shut down closer could conceivably hurt our chances at a TOR SP in the offseason.... But, if you add Ross, are we even looking for one? Or just going after Heyward instead? That'd make sense to me anyway.....

Yeah if you add Ross, it's hard to picture a huge contract SP being the target. Fowler/the OF would seem to be more likely, and they won't have the cost of someone like Price.

Hey, speaking of FA to be OF, Upton could also be in play in a 'big' deal.

Doesn't he hate chicago/cubs and he has to give permission to be traded there?

I don't know what a really big deal with SD would be if Kimbrel isn't in it. Ross and Upton sure isn't it.

I mean, it's a semantical nitpick, but Ross and Upton are a pair of 3+ win players, and Ross is controlled for several years. It'd take a decent size quality and quantity from the Cubs to get them. That seems pretty 'big' to me.

That said, I'd prefer Ross/Kimbrel to Ross/Upton, myself.

Also isn't kimbrel having kind of an iffy year based on peripherals and stuff? Or was the guy who posted that full of [expletive]? Too lazy to look it up on my phone

His peripherals match his performance, and both are slightly down from peak Kimbrel. He still has a 2.75/2.49/2.46 ERA/FIP/xFIP

I'm pretty sure I remember it reported he had the Cubs on his no-trade list and then it was found out he removed them/they weren't on it. But then again I could be completely making that up in my head.

Edit: Maybe that was Hamels. But, really, why the [expletive] wouldn't he want to come to Chicago for a two-month playoff push? Makes no sense. He's set to be a free agent and this will only make him a little more attractive to potential buyers. Plus, you know, potential playoffs and all.

If by lately you mean two of the last three games, sure. He's been terrible this month.

Kimbrel has a 2.49 FIP and a 2.46xFIP, it worse than his usual. But still damn good.

I do think Upton hates Wrigley though, not positive about it however. He's been very, very bad the last month and a half or so, if I'm not mistaken.

Club executives involved in the Tyson Ross talks are convinced the #Padres will trade him by deadline, and #Cubs are pushing hard.

He is also inexplicably suffering from his highest HR/FB this season. He's only given up 3 home runs, but it's good for 11.1%, highest in his career thus far.

Also suffering from a .310 BABIP, which is the highest it's been since 2011 when it was .315. The previous 3 years it was .235, .263, and .250. I mentioned it in the Kennedy/Shields post I made in one of the other vague threads about their funky HR numbers despite peripherals being more or less similar to career norms, and Kimbrel is experiencing a similar situation, albeit to a lesser degree than the others.

Yeah. And the way we put together a pitching staff means we pretty much always need to be acquiring pitching. If we want the 2016 staff to be as good as this one, moves like this are probably needed.

But also for this year.

Yeah thats true...

So assuming we get Ross and sign Price/zimmerman/Cueto/Grienke/etc who is the odd man out of the rotation Hendricks? Hammel? Or do they just go get the best bats possible?!?:)

Ace via FA

Arrieta

Lester

Ross

Hendricks/Hammel?

If they get a piece like ross, would it maybe make more sense to go for a cheaper guy than price like zimmerman and go hard at a dude like heyward?

*If* by some miracle they had six good starting pitchers and every single one of them was healthy come Opening Day, I'd put Hammel in the pen, but ymmv.

guys gain a bit of velo in the pen usually, wonder what hammel would toss? 95/96?

well they do have Matt Kemp trying to play defense and had Wil Myers experimenting with CF for a while, amongst other unfavorable defensive alignments

It would be substantial, sure. But in the context of some kind of brewing blockbuster no, I don't think it's close. Even if you don't believe Ross' elbow is a grenade with the pin pulled, he's a mid-rotation starter, not a #1 or even a #2. And Upton, while he's not as bad as he has been the last two months (which is almost Castro bad) he's not an elite bat. He's also a rental - exactly the sort of player Theo said he wasn't going to pay big for. This isn't the sort of big deal you'd even consider including Baez in.

Gordo's latest makes it sound like Ross may not get dealt and Kennedy is the best bet, with Dan Haren as a possibility. [expletive] ugh.

He does mention Teheran again, but says the Braves want Soler, even if they're willing to send more than Teheran back....Can't see that happening obviously. McKinney seems like a nice lead piece to me for him.
