@JeffPassan: Sources: Astros-Padres believed to be working on "something big." They've talked Tyson Ross and Craig Kimbrel. San Diego could use a CF.

Damnit

Wasn't this basically the same exact thing said about the Cubs and Padres as well?

Yes. And with the clock ticking down, I have to wonder if this is last minute smokescreen to get us to offer up Baez, who they seem to really want.

The wanting a CF thing stands out as strange. They're not going anywhere this year, and for now, they have Veneble and Bad Upton until Myers is back. Doesn't make sense for them to give up major trade chips for one.

If it's just a trade for Ross, I'd have to imagine it would be Baez and not Castro or a prospect package with neither.

I can't imagine the Padres trading Ross AND adding payroll in the process

Edit: or do what Deeg said above and pay some of Castro's salary.

I was under the impression that the Padres were desperately trying to dump salary after last winters uncharacteristic splurge.

@Ken_Rosenthal: Sources: #Cubs among teams engaged in ongoing dialogue with #Indians about deal for Carrasco. Teams continuing to call CLE, make offers.

Please please please don't deal Baez A) In a year we don't really have a shot, and B) before he gets another chance at the bigs.

I would be sick to my stomach if we traded him for a 5th starter and then I look up in a year or two and he is cracking 30hr a year from second base for someone else.

They won't trade him for a 5th starter. Only way Baez goes is in a deal for a mid/top of the rotation starter with at least 2-3 years of team control. Let's say they trade Baez straight up for Carlos Carrasco. If he doesn't get injured, Carrasco could put up 15-17 WAR between now and 2020. Not that Baez couldn't do that or that it would make me happy at all because I love Baez and want to see him dominate as a Cub, but Carrasco is a valuable player. Then again, why are the Indians shopping him when he's relatively cheap until 2018 and has a $9M team option for 2019 and $9.5 for 2020? That is terrifying to me because I think the Indians GM is actually decent.

Same with Ross, they must know he's throwing ~47% sliders and trying to deal him before he tears his elbow up. But, then again, Preller is clearly a moron.

@Buster_ESPN: Cubs are on Tommy Hunter; the Cubs aren't really in the Craig Kimbrel mix now. Houston continues to talk Kimbrel.

A bit less boner inducing.

Carrasco is cheap $$ and a stud this would let the cubs have alot of flexability. I wouldn't be mad if it costed javy at least he would be in the AL

Kimbrel would have been nice. But as long as it doesn't necessarily mean that we're out on Ross too, I'm ok with it. But I'd happily take Carrasco instead.

Hunter would be a nice addition to the bullpen. And perhaps if he we're a Cub, I'd finally stop confusing him with Tommy Hanson.

Hunter is kind of the Ian Kennedy of the RP class. Certainly not a difference maker 9th inning guy - at best, he'd probably be our 4th best reliever. If the cost is extremely low, not a big bad pickup.

Wouldn't bead if he cost us Javy? I wouldn't be mad if Andrew Cashner cost us Javy. I'd jump up and down like a 12 year old girl who just scored Justin Bieber tickets if Carrasco cost us Javy.

If we're picking up $1.5MM, I can't imagine the minor leaguer being anything more than a Rule 5 bait or AAA spare part.

If they are dealing with the Indians I really want theo to do what it takes to get brantley. .300 avg CF locked up til 2018.. I'd give up soler and baez tbh. We need more High avg hitters anyways

They won't move Brantley for anything short of Schwarber + more for the reasons you just stated.

Let me go on record as saying that if we miss out on Carrasco and/or Ross to someone who offers the equivalent of McKinney, Contreras, and Stinnett, I will lose my ever loving mind and do the forehead injection thing. And I still don't get that reference. And if I claim consolation in the fact that we didn't "overpay," it will be a big, fat lie.

The thing that would annoy me is standing pat and Theo going on the radio and preaching patience and how he doesn't want to mortgage the long term prospects and how there has to be a balance between short term and long term etc. for the millionth time
