Kerry Lester

Gotta say, I love Lester getting #34--hopefully it will help some of the false Kerry Wood hero worship from Cubs fans and hopefully ends any chance of it ever being retired for a guy whose on-field stats don't come close to earning that honor. Nothing against Woody, but those are just facts.

scorching hot facts

Cubs fans overrate Kerry Wood. Not sure what objective measure you can come up with, but I'm about 99% sure it's true. Look, the guy is responsible for 3 or 4 unbelievable moments and 3 or 4 outstanding seasons, but he in no way, shape, or form, deserves to have his number retired, but you'll find people arguing for it.

good for you taking the lead on setting the record straight.

the concept of a retired jersey is a stupid one, if it's going to happen there's nothing wrong with honoring guys fans really liked.

You retire a jersey for someone who has actually accomplished something over their career. Wood did not.

Under your criteria, Tuffy Rhodes' and Mickey Morandini's jersey would be retired.

Look people, when you get paid a certain amount, you shouldn't be leading the league in smiles.

David Haugh

‏@DavidHaugh First impression is I thought Jon Lester would smile more for a guy who just signed $155M contract. Serious approach. Leader.

We have a lovingly crafted statue of a sloppy drunk who was terrible at his job; who gives a [expletive] if they retire Wood's number or not?

I'd be pretty annoyed if they retired his number before Sosa

My first impression of David Haugh was I wanted to punch him in the face. That impression has not faded.

Patrick Mooney

@CSNMooney

#Cubs tailored presentation to Jon Lester's family, selling how they could help his foundation and differences between Boston/Chicago media.

Theo: So the media in Chicago is less aggressive than Boston's, but considerably dumber

Jon: Sounds great!

Jed: .................

More good quotes:

Scott Lauber

@ScottLauber

Theo on reax when #RedSox dealt Lester in July: "We were too busy high-5ing that we wouldn't have to give up draft pick if we signed him"

Bruce Levine

@MLBBruceLevine

Theo Epstein - Jon took less from us than the best offer out there( Giants ? )

Paul Sullivan

@PWSullivan

Theo says giving out first no-trade clause was necessary and "in the spirit of the negotiations."

Jed on Bryant next year: "He's probably going to be spending a lot of time in Chicago next year"

Definitely looks like he will start in AAA.

I mean...ten days in AAA = 1 extra year of team control.

WHY DO PEOPLE STILL HAVE ANY DOUBT ABOUT THIS.

God, that is so stupidly hot take-y from Haugh. Is that the kind of crap that leads to getting columnist jobs?

Missed the press conference. Busy retiring Kerry Wood's number. Anything good happen?

I didn't see it, but I guess they unveiled a statue of Kerry Wood soaked in apete6's urine or something.

Even funnier since he was adamant about NOT being a leader outside of just being professional and doing his best and yadda-yadda-yadda.

At one point, I really liked Haugh, years ago. Then he got Morrisey's job when he left the Trib, and Haugh's decent into stupidity began. It's been gradual, but noticeable. It's culminated with him having "dumb-off" contest daily with David Kaplan.

The descent did come after he became a columnists, but it was not gradual at all.

It will help him hunt the homeless in Wrigleyville.

I'm pretty sure most of the Cubs blogosphere and local media are about ready to have Theo's babies for making a deer urine joke.

That's been the case for 3 years before any deer urine reference.
