I read somewhere that Cubs GM was going to be at this press conference to announce the signing of the largest contract in Cubs history, but I haven't seen him.

Hi, I have a question for Jed...

How awesome are Jon and Theo??

Holy [expletive]. He made the decision a few hours before it was announced. Just thinking this through-Wife calls father, father texts NoCode, who immediately posts. Very good chance we DID know before Theo did.

Bringing the kid up there is a pro move.

he's got a little bit of a short fuse with the kid

As long as there's no Adrian Peterson situation, we're in good shape.

This is why I never understood why Jed left his GM job in SD to come to the Cubs. I'm not saying he doesn't have an important role in the Cubs FO, but in terms of how he's viewed by fans and media he's Theo's assistant. There are absolutely no questions you could ask Jed that you wouldn't ask Theo instead.

Jed's there to be available for interviews in the event that Theo is busy.

Gotta say, I love Lester getting #34--hopefully it will help some of the false Kerry Wood hero worship from Cubs fans and hopefully ends any chance of it ever being retired for a guy whose on-field stats don't come close to earning that honor. Nothing against Woody, but those are just facts.

There was never a chance Wood's jersey was going to be retired. That's basically the only fact in this post.

When you have a job interview but don't hear back right away and want to check back to see how it went but don't want to call the potential boss you call the HR lady or one of the underlings to ask about it. Jed is that person.

There's nothing wrong with having a bit of hero worship for Kerry Wood.

Giant raise(I think he doubled his salary), gets to work with buddies again, and the challenge of being part of the group that finally does it.....

Cubs fans overrate Kerry Wood. Not sure what objective measure you can come up with, but I'm about 99% sure it's true. Look, the guy is responsible for 3 or 4 unbelievable moments and 3 or 4 outstanding seasons, but he in no way, shape, or form, deserves to have his number retired, but you'll find people arguing for it.

good for you taking the lead on setting the record straight.

the concept of a retired jersey is a stupid one, if it's going to happen there's nothing wrong with honoring guys fans really liked.

They don't overrate him, they are just more sentimental towards him than they should be for a pitcher with his career numbers. And I understand why. 20K game, coming back to start Game 3 in 98, the multiple one hitters, the occasional big hit, the 03 playoffs which included a win that happened largely because of his pitching and 2 RBI double, winning a deciding game 5 with dominant pitching, and a game tying HR in Game 7 of the NLCS, his multiple returns from career altering injuries, his willingness to adapt to the pen, his love of Chicago and the Cubs organization, the fact that he's the only Cub since the 30's to play on 4 Cubs playoff teams, etc etc.

It's not like retired numbers are a HOF. It's as much about sentimental crap like what we love Wood for as it is about overall on field achievement.

And the 20K game was a few games into his rookie year...and with Zambrano being a crazy person, and Sosa's rep being ripped to shreds, Wood is a guy that fans can hold onto from that era.

Anyway, Lester was about as you would expect during the press conference. Didn't "wow" anyone or necessarily "win" the press conference, but he did fine and likely won't be bothered by the pressure with his experience in Boston. Just looking forward to seeing the guy pitch and pretty damn excited for the season.
