Sickels' post-Garza trade 2011 Cubs prospect list included Trey McNutt, Chris Carpenter, and Jaye Chapman in the top 5.

i remember jaye chapman.

he did come over from ATL

last year threw 6.1 ip for Iowa with an ERA over 15.00

12 innings lifetime in the show, all with the Cubs in '12.

FIP was 3.59, but he also had a BB% of 7.5

not exactly shocking news here:

RT @jjcoop36: The cubs have the top farm system in baseball now. Pretty easy to say that with three top 10 prospects.

I can already hear Steve Stone saying, "...but who's going to pitch for them?"

So is it fair to say that this would be our starting 8 going into opening day 2015:

C Castillo

1B Rizzo

2B Baez/Castro

SS Castro/Russell

3B Russell/Baez

LF Bryant

CF Alcantara

RF Free Agent/Soler

Would it be wishful thinking to believe we'd get mid-late 90s era Cleveland Indians production out of this lineup? Very young and a good chunk won't have any MLB service time, but damn this group of players makes me excited for next season!

In years past, I always made fun of the proposed future lineups that were all prospects (Patterson, Hill, Choi!), but [expletive] it, I absolutely want the entire 1-8 to be home grown. Screw free agent bats

If I'm the GM, I am keeping all the major prospects for now. I'd try to make a trade for a vet OF bat without using my major guys or just sign someone. Doesn't have to be a Stanton type imo. But I'd be very interested in Kemp, who shouldn't cost a ton. Id pay a little more for Cargo. Or Id sign a guy like Cruz or Rasmus for 2 years to stabilize the balance of young bats.

As for pitching, you gotta get Maeda. The current team would be awesome with Tanaka. Can't miss out on the next one. Id also go after a reclamation guy along the Hammel lines. Morrow, Brett Anderson, Josh Johnson.

C- Castillo

1b- Rizzo

2b- Baez after mid May

Ss- Castro

3b- Valbuena

LF- Bryant after mid May

Cf- Alcantara

RF- Cruz

Sp- Maeda, Arrieta, Wood, Jackson, Morrow is a better team than the one that's been playing well the last 6 weeks.

baez and bryant aren't going to be there opening day 2015, much less russell and soler.

well, soler maybe if he had more PAs this year, but he hasn't.

I understand that Russell had a hamstring issue at the start of the season, but from the sound of what's been posted on Oakland A's boards, it seems that he would've been in AA/AAA for them for most of the 2014 season, if not a mid-season call up if the injury didn't happen. Do we see the Cubs holding him in the minors for another full season?

Also, with the way Bryant is hitting at all levels and and Baez starting to put it together on a more consistent basis in Iowa (yes, small sample size over the last 3-4 weeks), do we really think those two won't make it on the opening day roster in 2015?

Now I'm thinking this doesn't really move the needle on 2015 that much. Russell could be a late-2015 guy, but 2016 seems more likely. Straily has some real problems and it's too early to tell whether he's a Volstad or an Arrieta.

Which isn't a problem, I'm still super-psyched about the return. I'd just like to point out that we *again* didn't get the near-ready TOR prospect to be plugged into the next-year projection, just like Garza, the 2013 draft and the 2014 draft.

If he's not up now he isn't going to be here opening day.

If Baez and Bryant aren't called up this year, it would be dumb for them to be on the opening day roster.

Arrietta isn't much of a comp for Straily, considering that he throws about 7 MPH harder.

I can't see this front office and ownership burning the resources to get Stanton. I'd love for them to figure a way to do it though. I'm guessing Stanton gets traded in the offseason. Maybe Castro + Almora + ? But don't they have a pretty nice SS already? Edited by CubinNY

They could pull the trigger and still be loaded with prospects. And the money is there.

I don't see Russell up in the first half 2015. He's a high school bat with 158 professional games and missed a large chunk of this season due to injury. I would think with the Cubs patient approach they would keep him in AA/AAA until they believe he's ready.

2014-2015 wave: Baez, Bryant, Alcantara

2016 wave: Russell, Schwarber? (If he follows Bryant timeline)

2017 wave: Soler (maybe 2016 if healthy and productive), Almora, McKinney

Not including pitchers obviously

assuming health (which obviously is a big question mark right at this very moment), i don't see soler taking much longer than the second half of next year.

Also this move pretty much locks Rizzo in as the Cubs all star this year doesn't it?

Castro has a shot

yeah i'd really like for both of them to make it. it's deserved.

If Soler isn't up for at least 2.5 more years, something has gone very wrong.

Not the least among them that he's cleared waivers, because he's out of options after 2015.
