I did post this in the Samardzija thread, but I think this is a big enough rumor to merit its own thread.

Ken Rosenthal ‏@Ken_Rosenthal 3m

Addison Russell’s name has been discussed with #Cubs, sources tell me and @jonmorosi. He is not playing today for #Athletics’ Double A club.

Ken Rosenthal ‏@Ken_Rosenthal 3m

#Cubs in serious talks with #Athletics on big trade, sources tell me and @jonmorosi. If completed, Hammel and/or Samardzija would go to A’s.

Addison Russell? Yes, plz.

The A's? Unless Russell IS involved, I want them no where near Shark.

well the whole point is that it looks like he is dummy!

I want big league ready pieces if we're dumping Samardzija, but Russell seems like a good start. Does he project elsewhere outside of SS? I imagine he could play second.

Supposed to be a 3b long-term, I think.

Well, that would speak volumes as to their thoughts on Kris Bryant's long-term position, I suppose.

I'm am now hearing that #Athletics are indeed talking to #Cubs about Hammel or Samardzjia, confirmed independently of Fox Sports' report.

The first thing I thought of with Russell is that acquiring him makes one of our bigger prospects (or Russell himself) moveable for a bigger name at the deadline or in the offseason. Naturally Stanton is the dream target that comes to mind, and the Cubs would have enough bullets to get him and still have plenty of prospects in the pipeline if Russell is acquired. Loading up and shoving guys down the line is never a bad thing. I want *all the position prospects*

Doesn't have to speak to anything. He's an extremely valuable asset that we'd be acquiring. You don't worry about fitting guys together, especially not when all of the names you're talking about are minor leaguers.

That's a good point.

Without knowing much about the discussions, obviously, if we could get Russell for Hammel, I'd bow at Theo's feet.

It's got to be Shark, or both.

With our need for pitching, I'd guess that one of Millone, Straily, or Pomeranz would be involved

Shark/Hammel/Valbuena for Gray/Russell/Straily......

I seriously cannot imagine what an early July deal for both would look like, but I bet it would be sexy as hell.

I'd venture a guess that Alcantara might be a possibility to be included

I doubt that. That'd be approaching a lateral move given the major league piece(s) involved.

@DCameronFG: Cubs have lots of things that could go to Oak with an arm. Valbuena could be useful 2B down the stretch

a couple of weeks ago i saw valbuena as a longer term starter but he is slumping so he sucks now so sign me up!
