Personally, I'd be surprised if Lake has an everyday spot on opening day. Sweeney in LF or CF, Schierholtz in RF, and someone from the Granderson/Ellsbury/Choo/Cruz group in LF or CF would be my guess. Lake could be the 4th outfielder and platoon partner for one of those spots. Would need another righty outfielder on the bench as well (Vitters?).

I still am highly doubtful that this FO will make that big veteran "top-tier free agent" splash this off-season. After 2014, with more and more prospects, particularly arms,in the upper levels? I can see that, but it just feels like this is one-year early to make that big splash, based on what the FO has said and done. Granted, maybe they are trying to get everyone to think that way for a specific purpose, but with so many teams flush with money, I'm taking them at face-value for now.

I'm the opposite; I think this means they are very interested in bringing someone in for 2014.

They signed Edwin for decent $$ this offseason at a position of weakness, why wouldn't they try to do the same for the lineup? Add an OF, get somewhat bounce back years from Castro/Rizzo and this lineup isn't looking all that bad.

Hoyer acknowledges $ big consideration in DeJesus trade. About $2.5 mil savings

Very unexpected. I have no idea what to deduce from this, other than that Hoyer is getting a prospect they like. Give that we have basically Schierholz and who knows what in the outfield, DeJesus certainly seemed like a guy the might have kept. And he's been very positive leader-type, which the Cubs seem to value to some degree.

So I'm assuming Washington is giving somebody McLeod thinks has a shot to be worthwhile. Of course, he thought that about Concepcion, too, so we'll see. But, if we can get some better-than-Pinyera A-ball pitcher, great.

I can't imagine they are counting on Lake being good. My guess is they don't think they know what Lake will be; he could be pretty bad, but there's a chance he'll be pretty good. At this stage in a rebuild, why not give him an extended look and hope he's one who does work out well.

Last, I don't think they really love DeJesus as a CF.

Well thank God for that. I'm guessing this means the return sucks if they're picking up the entire contract.

I forgot about the $1.5m buyout in addition to the ~$1m in salary left this year.

Totally just paid off the international signing penalty.

Pinchin' pennies.

You would rather have had us win 77 games next year instead of 74 thereby picking 12th instead of a protected top 10 pick in 2015, and not signing two of those international prospects? I'm all for redistributing cash to the farm system when we know we won't compete. Edited by The-Kris-Bryant

I'd prefer the Cubs could afford something which should be a piddling expense for a team like this instead of trading off a reasonably valuable player effectively for cash.

Plus you can know you won't compete all the damn time if you put a middling team on the field.

For what it's worth (not much), I overheard Kap on WGN talking about the trade of his "good buddy" (vomit). He said that while the Cubs will never admit it, he thinks the main driver is to lose as many games as possible this year to ensure a better draft pick next year.

i'd rather they win 92 games next year, personally.

Well dejesus isnt a 12 win player. I doubt the FO is looking at 2014 as a year where they expect to win over 85 or so games. They're probably looking at 2014 as a nice step to average before hoping to take the leap into contention in 2015.

That's looking like it could be a pretty huge leap.

No [expletive]. But there's basically no way that happens regardless, unless damn near everything breaks really right.

Well, unless some teams get really generous in trade negotiations with the Cubs. I really don't think losing DeJesus has any tangible effect on next year's outcome in any case.

god it's hysterical watching people [expletive] themselves over a 70-win team trading a 2-win player. HEAVEN FORBID

i love when people are like, "i wish the cubs were good," and like 20 people respond mockingly with "PFFT HOW DO YOU EXPECT THEM TO PULL THAT OFF???" as if every team that ever won anything in major league history first had to endure 5 seasons of being terrible.

The Cuba have a budget just like everyone else. When they overspend like crazy in IFA signings, they have to shift money around. Saving a few mil on Dejesus and letting him go isnt going to change the trajectory of the organization and nor was he expected to be a part of it. We are probably gonna get a decent return like Pineyro

The Cubs shouldn't have to worry about these things given the money the pull in. It's more than a tad ominous how relatively limited they are financially. That's all I'm saying. It's not the end of the world, but it sucks that so many things have lined up to work against their favor in terms of really maximizing how popular the team is.
