So it doesn't sound like there's any conditions at all as far as the Rangers' or Garza's performance. Cubs just haven't decided who they want yet.

Ramirez came off those arm issues recently, so it seems like they simply wanted to get a longer look at how he's throwing now, which makes sense.

@GDubCub Cubs PTNBL deal w/Tex works like this:If they choose Ramirez, deals done.If they don't take him, they get to select 2 from a pool

I'll take the pool for 100 Alex.

Gimme Ramirez all day.

That depends on the pool. There are question marks around Ramirez, but he's near MLB ready starting pitching with an intriguing ceiling.

Yeah, pretty much.

Marlin:

Essentially what you said. Both sides saw some medical stuff, talks broke down for a few days and came back with essentially the same deal when it was all said and done since there was significant urgency to get the deal done on both sides.

That was in response to this post:

So did we find out what was the issue on the Texas side. What were the concerns there? I recall folks saying 7 straight pages of OLT being the medical concerns and all the while was hearing Ramirez and Marlin said he heard of the issue with Garza's medicals.

Last Marlin note:

Yeah Odor and Sardinas are not the PTBNL. Odor was a sticking point for the Cubs until today though. Clock ran out.

Putting two and two together, it sounds like the Cubs insisted on Odor as the final piece to close out a deal, Texas refused, medicals on everyone else involved was exchanged, the Cubs found some stuff wrong with their side to partially try and force them to give Odor, the Rangers countered with something they didn't like with Garza's elbow, and everyone just decided to sub in Grimm for Odor to finish it off. Not fully convinced Odor was more than a request right now. Or at least i'll tell myself that to make me feel better.

Really depends on who the pool is. Ramirez seems like the ceiling on the arms we could likely get, so we're looking at several guys below that. There's some raw upside guys in the system (as there is in all systems), but if Ramirez is sort of a ceiling on the talent of the arms we can get, then there's a case to be made for gambling on Ramirez's upside because we don't need filler/solid, as we have that.

Yeah, that is probably true, but I just don't like what I've heard about possible shoulder issues (and presumably that is why the deal wasn't made for Ramirez outright). I would rather gamble with some healthier, although rawer, young arms.

To be honest, I'm okay not getting Odor. I like Odor a ton, and I think he'll be in the majors sooner than later (really wouldn't shock me if he saw the bigs late in 2014). I wouldn't even be surprised if he turned out to be a better offensive performer than Jurickson Profar. We had specific, and large, pitching needs, and this trade meets it. Had we gotten Odor, that would've been awesome, but okay, clock ran out, and we got arms. That's okay.

I know nothing about this guy, but can't imagine the pool would be better. Grab Ramirez.

Clearly the concern with Ramirez' health.

I like Garza quite a bit, but I like this trade even more. This seems like a really good move.

Big arm, dirty stuff, tons of k's, failed at AAA last year, awesome at AA this year, 24.

Ramirez is a very solid 4th piece. I am curious as to who the other pitching options are though. If Payano or a Kevin Matthews, maybe Yohander Mendez and Nick Martinez are in the group to take 2 from- I'd be very tempted to go that route.

So where do these guys slot into our to 30? Olt must slot somwhere into the top 10. Do any of the others crack the list?

My first thought is to put Edwards at No. 6. Olt not in top 10.

This just got me excited. If Olt is not even in our top 10.....this farm system is real nice right now.

It is. Also Olt is awful.

Kyle seems like a good guy. I'm going to go with him on this because it makes me even more excited about our system.

My initial gut feeling would be something like

The elite tier - Baez/Bryant/Almora/Soler in some order. I think you can argue for each guy at the top, although my preference is probably Baez.

The good, but not elite - Alcantara, Pierce Johnson (in that order)

Intriguing but have some questions/warts/need to see more - Olt, Zastryzny, Edwards, Vizcaino. Not real sure on the order here, but wanted to get to 10, and you could make a case for probably 4-5 more guys (Alberto Cabrera comes to mind, along with Vogelbach). Honestly, could probably make an argument for someone like Paul Blackburn even. Very fluid, but a positive sign for our depth.

Olt not in the top 10? You are way off base. He was a top 25 prospect in the game according to all 4 top BA guys prior to the season. Great buy low by Theo & Jed due to medical issues affecting his performance earlier this season. He'll be in our top 10.
