Matt Cavanaugh announced as QB coach, and Skip Peete as RB coach. Cavanaugh has been QB coach for the Jets since 2009.

How has he managed to keep an NFL job the last 4 years?

Seriously. If we're all going to give coaches credit for Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers, surely we have to dock points for the guy that coaches Mark Sanchez. Right?

On one hand Sanchez has gotten worse and worse and not developed at all as a QB under Cavanaugh. On the other hand, he sucks anyway and they got what they could out of him before he was exposed. He has been involved in some mediocre to awful NFL offenses throughout his career though.

The most hilarious thing about the press conference was when Emery stated his draft philosophy was to draft the best player available regardless of position or system.

So in looking at 2012, he MAY have done that once out of the first 4 picks? Someone please tell me how Mcclellinor(or rodriguez, or Hardin) fits with that statement?

McClellin was considered an odd fit for Lovie's defense by many.

Because the Bears big board doesn't match Kipers or yours or whoever.

Exactly why BPA is so meaningless. Many times there could be a number of players considered to the be the best at that point.

I don't think anyone pretends BPA isn't a fluid discussion, otherwise you could upload rankings and let a computer make the pick. It just means you won't let fit or need override clear talent differences. Especially when comparing across positions, objective analysis can only get you so far. The goal of BPA is to get your rating language consistent across all positions and scouts and put the final ratings through rigourous analysis so your final decision has a small of a pool as possible to choose from.

The problem is those so-called "clear talent differences" are completely subjective and not clear at all. Ignoring need is stupid in the NFL.

Purdue fans were grumbling about Cavanaugh as a Purdue OC candidate because of Sanchez. Then the Bears hired him....

@danpompei

League sources say Bears very interested in Mel Tucker to be their defensive coordinator. He could be the man.

Looks like he started calling defensive plays in 2011, Jax was 5th (Bears 4th) in FO's defense rankings for 2011. They did drop to 28th this past season though.

Only if you suck at your job. And granted everyone sucks at some poi t or another, but you should try to suck less than everyone else. Going primarily by need or fit just ends up in reaches. If you have a real need, FA is a much more reliable means anyways. Tge draft is more about playing odds while minimuzing risk.

He was a DC in Cleveland too.

Yeah, looks like he was pretty good there too.

Michael Wright was saying that he has experience coordinating both 3-4 and 4-3, so that if we did want to switch in the future, we could keep him around.

It's not about going "primarily by need". You can't just draft an OT in the first round no matter who is there. But needs has to play a major part.

I like that he's had some interim head coach duty as well. This staff needs some significant NFL experience added to it and not just with position coaches getting promotions.

I'm fine with Hoke. Tucker intrigues me, but honestly, I think if we pass over Hoke for him, he'll probably ask to leave (and Tucker may not want him). So with the choice of Hoke or Tucker I'll take continuity and do my best to replenish the assistants. Ideally I'd bring in Tucker and keep Hoke though.

Yes, I'm sure Trestman would have come to Chicago to be the OC for a lame duck coach when the whole reason he bolted to Canada in the first place was that he grew weary of a lack of stability from his head coaches getting fired and having to jump from job to job.

Don't call it that.
