You guys think the Bears would have interest in Welker if the Pats decide not to re-sign him? He still is pretty good and the exact type of slot WR the Bears need.

That'd be a lot of money tied up in the WR position with Welker and Marshall. I'd rather keep developing Jeffrey and maybe see what you can pick up in the draft.

It would be a lot of money and maybe Welker isn't the guy, but I feel like a slot WR similar to Welker is a major need on the team. Probably a top 5 need, imo.

I can't believe the Chicago media is turning on Cutler

Really?

OK, I can. But its annoying none the less.

I think it's funny that they're fawning over Flacco though...

What Joe Flacco told me at '08 Senior Bowl about Bears: "I've heard they have an interest." Flacco picked 18th. Bears took C. Williams 14.

Crap, its not as though Flacco was freaking Peyton Manning coming out of college. He played at Deleware and there were tons of questions about how that would translate to the NFL. Six weeks ago when the Ravens struggled to beat San Diego sports media jackasses were asking whether he is a franchise QB.

The real difference between Jay Cutler and Joe Flacco is coaching and O-Line play. Flacco also has more weapons around him than Jay and has for several years.

I'm still waiting for an OLine so I can judge what level of QB Cutler really is. Haven't seen it yet. Been waiting for years. Still waiting. :-"

Fwiw I think Cutler is a better QB than Flacco. Flacco isnt that good.

At best, he's maybe (?) a marginal upgrade to Cutler. I think they're probably about equal. Thinking this team will somehow turn around by giving up multiple first round picks to get Flacco is stupid, especially when that decision is based on one half of a game.

Flacco would have been murdered behind our line by now.

I believe with a TE that can actually catch the ball and average OL play - is safe to assume an average OL can offer enough pass protection to enable the RB and TE to run routes? - we'll see a vast improvement in Cutler and the offense. It also helps in Trestman the Bears have a HC with a clue about offense, Lovie never had a clue, didn't want to have a clue about offense.

Have you seen him this year? I think he went into his decline phase this year. He doesn't look like he used to and dropped a lot of easy passes this year IMO. It would be an overpay to get him even if he was still awesome. Plus Bears don't have a big cap space and have a bunch of other needs to fill. I would rather sign Brian Hartline or even a Donnie Avery type.

Think we could just get Ted Thompson to recommend an late round receiver for us?

There's a WR from Mount Union that I like. Jasper Collins. I believe he's a 5th-6th round pick. He also can return kicks/punts.

Welker is too expensive. If u want that type of player u can sign Edelman or Hartline for a lot cheaper.

I don't get how some Bear fans keep bringing up names like Greg Jennings, Wes Welker, Dwayne Bowe, etc.

It's just not happening. The 3 main WRs for this team are Marshall, Jeffrey, and Bennett. Let's all just get used to it. It's really not a bad group.

Why talk about upgrading the WR position with a potentially very expensive player when there are so many needs on this team? It makes no sense whatsoever.

I don't know what this means right now, but Ron Jaworski in his preseason QB ranks after watching coaches film of every play from every QB in the prior year, had Cutler a slot or two above Flacco and in the top 10. If I remember correctly, he thought Flacco was a little underrated because the Ravens always had him throwing deep and outside. But he still had Cutler higher.

I'm sure he knows more about QB play than just about every guy in the Chicago media, and did way more homework. Granted, it was before this season.

It does make sense for the Bears to possibly address their WR corps. Emery has gone on record saying that he models himself after Thomas Dimitrioff the Falcons GM and wants to actively seek out 'playmakers.' I think Emery making a splashy move at WR/TE is more likely then anything moving forward. They badly need speed at those positions.

I wouldn't say speed is not needed. But "playmaker" receivers cost an arm and a leg. I mean, how easy is it to get one? Speedy "playmakers" means Julio Jones, Dez Bryant, AJ Green. Forget it. Guys like that aren't available. Even a speedster like DeSean Jackson isn't happening.

Greg Jennings and Welker aren't even what you'd call speedy. Earl Bennet is just as fast as Greg Jennings or Wes Welker. Fast enough. That's not why he's not as good as those guys.

I 100% believe that a TE is necessary and is happening. A splashy upgrade at WR is just not happening.

Jeffery has so much potential to blow up next year. He showed in the GB game what he is capable of and didn't actually record a catch. With Marshall on the opposite side, presumably a real offense, and another camp, I think he has 60-catch, 800+ yard potential in a good offense. Ideally, you'd like a better 3rd WR than Bennett, who would be a really solid #4. But you're going to have to develop that guy. And Bennett's probably good enough as the 5th option if you get a good pass catching TE and get Forte more involved in the passing game.

Hopefully it's nothing and he's just on vacation or something, but someone tweeted Marshall the other day asking if he was going to work with Jeffery over the offseason and his response was something along the lines of "supposed to be but he won't return my texts"

here it is

maybe emery suggested him, but yes, trestman makes that hire.

I really think Emery likely did more than just suggest him, but even if we take that as the most involvement a GM has, they should have waited for a GM to suggest OC candidates rather than trust a coach with a horrible offensive track record have autonomy. Especially when its freaking Mike Tice and he's just sitting on your staff already anyways.

Maybe they were just trying to give Lovie enough rope to hang himself though.

It's hard for me (and, I suspect, several others) to believe you can hold to that, especially after seeing what Emery's idea of an offensive coaching hire looks like. Tice in no way, shape, or form resembles what Emery wants to do on that side of the ball, and Trestman proves that.

Your second theory is probably closer to the mark -- although I doubt they were actively hoping Lovie would hang himself. They just gave him one more chance to make an OC hire, that's all. And Lovie -- as he had done previously -- blew the hire. Emery certainly didn't block it, but I think that's about all I'd be willing to say.

A little late to respond here, but I'm past the Emery having anything to do with Tice as I looked up the timeline and Tice was OC before Emery was on board- which I completely forgot I guess. Then my comments were about the organization letting Lovie fail at another OC choice, this being before Emery was even in the picture.

No doubts about Emery's ability to bring in coaches here now.

Yeah speed at Wr would be ideal. I wouldnt go after it early though because it would be at the expense of TE OL or LB.

Yeah, Jeffery has immense potential but they need a speedy WR who can play the slot ahead of Bennett.

I agree that this is something better addressed in the draft than free agency since Melton and OTs should be the primary focus in FA.

How fast things change. Beginning of the 2011 season, the Bears had a healthy Johnny Knox and still had hopes for Devin Hester. Now they lack speed at the WR position.
