Wow my memory is terrible on the Tice timeline. I guess Tice was promoted before Enery was even hired. What a stupid organization.

Head coaches hire their staff. That doesn't make the bears stupid in the slightest

Not always, and not when said head coach had a poor track record on that side of the ball. Its not like there was some urgency to lose the great Mike Tice that you wouldn't wait for the GM even if its the head coaches final say. Going into last year, it would have been totally reasonable to expect a OC decision to at least have heavy influence from the GM.

For instance I highly doubt Trestman was the driving force behind Tucker, even if its ultimately his decision.

Head coaches hire the god damn staff

maybe emery suggested him, but yes, trestman makes that hire.

I really think Emery likely did more than just suggest him, but even if we take that as the most involvement a GM has, they should have waited for a GM to suggest OC candidates rather than trust a coach with a horrible offensive track record have autonomy. Especially when its freaking Mike Tice and he's just sitting on your staff already anyways.

Maybe they were just trying to give Lovie enough rope to hang himself though.

Nice hire by Trestman. Tucker seems like the kind of guy who could get whats lest out older guys like Tillman, Peppers and Briggs.

Now lets see if Urlacher comes back.

It's hard for me (and, I suspect, several others) to believe you can hold to that, especially after seeing what Emery's idea of an offensive coaching hire looks like. Tice in no way, shape, or form resembles what Emery wants to do on that side of the ball, and Trestman proves that.

Your second theory is probably closer to the mark -- although I doubt they were actively hoping Lovie would hang himself. They just gave him one more chance to make an OC hire, that's all. And Lovie -- as he had done previously -- blew the hire. Emery certainly didn't block it, but I think that's about all I'd be willing to say.

Moon Mullin is a crazy person.

Thoughts that occur watching conference championship games…

If the Ravens put their franchise tag (not the exclusive-rights one) on Joe Flacco, would you consider giving up the No. 1’s for him and cutting your losses with Jay Cutler?

The Bears gave up two No. 1’s for Cutler, who’d never been to the playoffs, so what do you trade for a quarterback who beat Andrew Luck, Peyton Manning and Tom Brady in this postseason alone and has never not been in the playoffs?

GM Phil Emery won’t make that deal; he’s already without a third-round pick because of the Brandon Marshall trade. And the Ravens know what they’ve got with Flacco.

But neither Emery nor Marc Trestman have skin the Jay Cutler game. So…

Well, he's right. The Bears have only NOT been in the playoffs 3 years in a row because of Cutler......missing games due to a terrible OL and WRs.

And it makes total sense to give up MORE 1st rounders for Joe Flacco, when there's other areas of greater need. Those can wait.

I don't understand his last sentence. Is that a typo or something?

There should be another word in there (in). Skin in the game is an expression that they're applying to Cutler. Basically, since they weren't responsible for bringing him to Chicago, they have no incentive to keep him around just to save face.

Giving up 2 firsts for Flacco would be pretty bad for any team, and horrible for the Bears who already have average QB play. It's a very big price for a marginal upgrade.

Just means that neither Emery or Trestman have anything invested in Cutler....neither were responsible for acquiring him, so Mullin feels this provides cover if they wanna cut bait.

Considering that Cutler met with the three finalists, I don't envision Emery having any desire to "cut bait" with Cutler anytime soon. It's more likely that we'll see an extension soon rather than seeing Cutler walk after 2013.

But if you're the Ravens, why in the world would you trade Flacco anyhow? Sports journalists in this town never fail to amaze me with their lack of analytical thinking. DDEEEERRRPPPP, BEARS WEATHER, RUN THE FOOTBALL, WE NEED DEFENSE, DDDEEEEEERRRPPP.

Oh, speaking of that, this morning on The Score, Dan Hampton spent a good while explaining that because Cutler met with the candidates, that he believes that "Cutler hired Trestman".

You guys think the Bears would have interest in Welker if the Pats decide not to re-sign him? He still is pretty good and the exact type of slot WR the Bears need.

That'd be a lot of money tied up in the WR position with Welker and Marshall. I'd rather keep developing Jeffrey and maybe see what you can pick up in the draft.
