I feel like some people are not realizing just how bad Long has been.

.

I feel like some people are relying far too heavily on completely unproven ranking systems to determine the value of football players.

Isn't this like the antithesis of NSBB?

I mean, I understand that baseball advanced metrics are a million times more reliable and proven, but there was a time when they weren't as widely acclaimed. Also, there's a lot of discussion of PER in NBA threads, FO ratings are used as gospel in most NFL threads, and even pass blocking efficiency (which is the ranking system I assume you're referring to) has been used to make many an argument without being questioned.

Why all the sudden is this system "completely unproven"?

I may be in the minority, but I think it's just as ludicrous when people value a baseball player solely on WAR. All numbers are useful, but determining a player's worth based on one number or formula isn't that helpful.

it's essentially a reflection of a player's net contribution to run production and run prevention. how isn't that extremely helpful?

The formula itself is very helpful as a data point in determining a player's value. What is not helpful is when discussions revolve around "[x] player is clearly better than [y] player because his WAR was higher was last year."

One thing that surprised me a little when it comes to formation of #Bears defensive coaching staff is that they ...

Did not bring in a position coach with a working history with new defensive coordinator Mel Tucker. The decision was made to keep defensive backs coach Jon Hoke and defensive line coach Mike Phair, holdovers from the Lovie Smith staff. Hoke is highly regarded and probably will wind up a coordinator somewhere soon. Phair did nice work with young defensive linemen, including Henry Melton, Corey Wootton and Shea McClellin, under Rod Marinelli. The linebackers coach Tim Tibesar comes from Purdue and worked previously under head coach Marc Trestman in Montreal. Perhaps Tucker was unable to land anyone he wanted to work with that he had a history with but usually a coordinator has at least one position coach he’s been associated with in the past.

if their WAR was higher, then we have no better measurement to indicate that that particular player wasn't better that year.

and the formual isn't a simple "data point", it's a collection of data points itself.

As a singular point data point, no. But assuming you have access to all other types of data, your best measure would include a really large variety of stats and data, even though WAR may already be a composite of sorts.

I mean, its not like its a standardized thing. The three major publications who produce it produce different numbers and as recently as this season adjustments were put in due to shortcomings related to defensive positioning.

WAR may be the single most valuable stat, but I understand the original point that by fans it sometimes is over relied on as an end all stat.

"I know Chicago really likes me," said Johnson. "I wouldn't mind going to the Texans; that's right by my house. I'm meeting with them. They run a good zone scheme and I wouldn't mind going there."

yeah, i could see us grabbing johnson but isn't he kind of like carimi in the fact that he's kind of a light, lanky dude?

He needs to add at least 10 lbs.

I know a lot of lineman have them these days, but those knee braces freak me out.

Are lineman using those as a precaution now, or are there that many players that have had surgeries on their knees?

I think it's fairly common for those taller lineman to have already had knee surgery in high school, let alone after 3-4 years of college. I doubt very man do it simply for precaution.

when I tore my acl, the guy selling me and sizing me up for one of those braces told me he sells them to colleges for their lineman to use as a precaution. take that for what it's worth.

#Bears WR Brandon Marshall tells @WaddleandSilvy that he'll begin training with 2nd year wideout Alshon Jeffery on Monday in South Florida.

Most do wear knee braces as a precaution. Pretty much every lineman in college wears double braces. Theres no way every OL has had surgery on both knees.

Correct. Iowa has been wearing them for over a decade and it's fairly standard across the country.

The idea is that the braces prevent their knees from extending too far in any direction helping to prevent acl tears, hyperextension, etc. for players who often have other players falling at their knees. And since they are offensive linemen, it doesn't matter if the braces slow them down at all.

Apparently Hester might seek a trade. Wants to play 2 or 3 more years but is unhappy with his role in the offense? Wonder if him and Cutler aren't making nice?

i don't mean that. hester is one of my all-time favorites. the things he did in the return game were absurd. i'll miss him, but since he's dropped a few steps he has no role on this team anymore.

Yeah, he really doesn't seem to have much use at this point, unfortunately. But [expletive] it; I'll always love the guy. I got to see him take one back in person and it's one of my favorite sports memories ever.

This was it:

I just don't understand how he can complain about his role in an offense that he doesn't even know yet. I have a feeling we keep him.
