i don't think we can franchise melton and still make a run at a FA LT that would be worth having.

Like Jake Long. Any word on whether Miami is going to sign/franchise him? If it means letting Melton go, I say good bye.

Why in the world...?

Melton is severely underrated.

Not really he was voted to the probowl and u will see the teams knocking down the door to sign him if he becomes available.

Keeping Melton may be most important though because of the lack of draft picks combined with number of needs. If u lose him u gotta go DT probably in the 1st round. And he's not going to be as good and its going to take away a pick that could be used on another position where the Bears don't have either s good or a young player which Melton is both.

Yeah, ok, I'll rephrase. He's severely underappreciated amongst fans.

According to Biggs, we have 10.5 mill of cap space. Franchising Melton would take up over 8 of that. Restructuring Peppers and/or extending Tillman are basicalky the options we have, assuming we want to keep Melton AND get a solid OT in FA.

If the Chiefs franchise Bowe again, that means that Branden Albert would be available in FA. Would the Bears, if they re-sign Melton for something like 7 mil. per year and restructure a couple of deals, have the room to make a competitive offer for him? I assume that Albert, being only 6 months older than Long and iirc without the injury history, would be a preferable option...

what are the rules concerning prorating signing bonuses?

Signing bonuses are prorated over the life of the contract. So, if a guy gets a $10Mil signing bonus over 5 years, it counts 2Mil against the cap every year. Doesn't matter if he gets all $10Mil up front, defers half, some or all of it.

Signing bonuses still count against the cap if you're cut though, right? Because that's guaranteed money.

The point is it is no longer prorated at $2m every year. If you cut a guy after year 3 then the remaining balance of the prorated bonus is pushed up to the "league year" you are operating in.

I believe you take the cap hit for the year you cut him. So a $10 mil signing bonus guy that gets cut after 3 years has the remaining $4 mil go against the cap all at once. What I'm not sure of is if that $4 mil is retroactive to year 3 or if it goes onto what would have been year 4.

Emery says no decision yet on Melton and the franchise tag.

Carimi could have upside at both guard or tackle. Still evaluating.

Saints do not plan to use their franchise tag on starting left tackle Jermon Bushrod. He will be an unrestricted free agent.

Bears do have the former Saints OC now...
