Someone like Welker is entirely a question of distributing assets.

We'll get way more getting a WR to provide half the production at a fraction if the cost and putting that money elsewhere.

Eddie Royal looked great with Marshall opposite and Cutler throwing the ball. With Alshon's potential added, we don't need to aim too high in WR to get a high marginal value.

Exactly. If the Bears get a LT and still somehow have 9Mil to play around with....get a Guard, or another tackle, or a TE and Center combo, or a DE opposite Peppers, or whatever. At that point, if you have Albert (in the Rotoworld example) and can get a starting OG under the cap too, and you still want a huge splash at WR, then draft Tavon Austin at 20. I'd love to have Welker, because he's a damn good player, but I don't see anyway that makes any logical sense to spend 9Mil on him when you have multiple needs on the OL.

Alshon will be a beast if healthy. I wouldn't mind a quick twitcher in the slot but Welker is too pricey.

The GB game showed me all I needed to see. He got called for 3 OPIs, but he physically dominated man coverage late in that game. It was the healthiest he was since the opener (big TD catch) and it showed in his separation. If those calls go as non-calls or against the D as they do 90% of the time, he has a huge game and the Bears are in the playoffs.

Agreed. And that's someone you can get after the first round in the draft.

Now, here is a position I have not seen #Bears linked to before .... in a mock draft of 1st Round by USA Today ...

Tony Pauline does a mock of the 1st round and he has the Bears selecting Ohio State DT Johnathan Hankins with the rationalization: “The Bears must draft at least one starting defensive tackle. Hankins could be a mainstay for years.”

Emery spent significant time working under former GM Jerry Angelo, who believed there was no such thing has having too many quality defensive linemen. But the Bears can handle their needs on the defensive front in free agency if they re-sign DT Henry Melton and DE/DT Israel Idonije, who has expressed a desire to return. Also, as I reported yesterday, expectation is team will tender an offer to RFA DT Nate Collins. Some other positions make more sense in Round 1, including OL, TE, CB and maybe even LB. That’s not to say adding a defensive lineman at another point in the draft is not a bad idea.

Jeff Dickerson just said on the radio that he's heard the coaches and players all want Urlacher back, that it's a matter of getting the money done.

Yeah, Pauline's logic is faulty.

Ive heard the FO wants Urlacher, Roach and Idonije back. I think change is good and u can upgrade at least 2 of those defensive positions while also getting younger.

I suspect they'll try to keep the D as stable as possible so they can get another year out of it, in order to focus on fixing the offense this year.

That's what I expect as a general strategy, but circumstances might alter that plan to some degree. Draft availability, cuts by other teams, etc...

Thats fine and all but u upgrade when and where u can. Idonije became a backup and u used a 1st round pick on his position. Roach has always been replaceable. You can either replace spare parts now or replace everyone at the same time (Urlacher, Roach, Tillman, Peppers, Idonije, Jennings, etc).

I agree about Idonije. If McClellin can't be the third DE in his second season, he's more worthless than I thought.

Here is latest mock from Don Banks at SI that brings #Bears followers on Twitter back where they want to be.

Banks, in his post-combine offering, has general manager Phil Emery selected Notre Dame tight end Tyler Eifert in the first round with the 20th overall pick. Eifert had a strong showing in Indianapolis and appears to be clearly ahead of Stanford’s Zach Ertz, the consensus second player at the position. Banks writes “Eifert exited the combine with a clear-cut advantage over the draft's other highly rated tight end, Stanford's Zach Ertz. Eifert ran a decent 4.68 in the 40, and he was strong in all of his drills. His first-round grade seems assured at this point, and he'd be the new target the Bears are hoping to acquire for quarterback Jay Cutler.”

In Banks’ first mock in January he had the Bears selected Ertz.

Eh...it's just weed.

Yeah, but he's a borderline player as it is. If you're Jake Long, it's just weed. If you're J'Marcus Webb, it's a potential career threatening offence.

He's more established than JT Thomas who saw a career upgrade the offseason following a drug offense.

They'd be better off going OL/LB/possibly a falling WR in the first and getting a guy like Escobar in round 2.

I think they want to address TE through free agency given the numerous options.
