Jake Long wants at least $10 million a year.

Does he really have the right to be making such demands? I know his first few years in the league he was absolutely dominant, but the last two have been injury plagued and his performance while on the field has been pretty shoddy. He of course should be payed as one of the better LTs in the league; but to blow away pretty much the rest of the LT market? I don't think so.

Of course he has the right to request $10m/year. Dominant tackles are rare, and valuable. They also don't make it to free agency very often. The NFL salary cap keeps going up but first contracts have shrunk with the new CBA. The whole reason the union was willing to accept that is they see more money going to already established players rather than unknowns. If he can make $15m under the franchise tag, and his first contract was 5/57, why wouldn't he ask for $10m per as a 28 year old free agent?

Nobody likes to pay running backs anymore. The league is all about passing and in order to pass you need a QB, a WR and a LT.

But he's not really a dominant tackle anymore. And he's not likely to be franchised, so, maybe I'm missing something, but I'm not really sure what you mean by that part.

The question was if he had the right to request $10m/year. The answer is that his agents would be incompetent to have the starting request be any lower.

Only Joe Thomas and Jason Peters will make more than $10 mil next year at LT. Gross is 3rd at 8.7 mil and Ferguson is 4th with 7.25 mil. This is base salary though. I'm gonna have to pass on him now if that's what it takes. I wonder what a guy like Beatty will ask for.

Btw, looking online, Gross and Ferguson will make $10+ after bonuses.

I love that title - "Quality Control". Sounds like he does hair for a living.

Like you said, he signed for 5/57 out of the draft, he's not taking huge pay cut when he's 28 and still in the top 5-8 LTs in the game.

He may not be dominant anymore, but I don't mind overpaying for such a huge need and a major upgrade over Webb. He's not Orlando Pace just yet.

He didn't make it into the top 20 in pass blocking efficiency for the second year in a row. I'm a little worried that he will be the Bears version of Orlando Pace.

Top 20 LTs or overall? Does missed time matter?

Of guys who are free agents tackles this offseason, PFF graded his 2012 performance 22nd.

PFF has the Bears O-line as #30.

Stud: I never thought I’d see the day where not only would J’Marcus Webb (-0.8) not be the weak link on this line, but also be the most consistent performer. He took a huge step forward this year in becoming an adequate left tackle. You can win football games with them.

I really don't know how this rating system works, but the 49ers were #1 and their stud had a +40.4 rating vs. the -0.8 rating for the Bears 'stud'

Yep. As the summary for the Bears said, their best lineman just "don't get beat regularly".

#Bears have lowest % of players drafted in last 5 years that are still in the NFL at 54.1, followed by #Colts at 55%. #Ravens most at 84.6%

What I meant was:

Long = Orlando Pace when he was on the Bears

not:

Long on the Bears = Orlando Pace

Sorry for the confusion.

Orlando Pace on the Bears was a shell of what Orlando Pace on the Rams was.

oddly enough, FO has the bears as better in pass blocking than the niners.

And my concern is Long could be the Bears version of Orlando Pace too. A second coming.
