Yes, I think next offseason he either needs to land that HC gig, or grab whatever DC position he can find.

Either that, or make a jump to college.

Any chance of Ray Horton?

Sounds like not.

Brad Biggs ‏@BradBiggs

Report from @JasonLaCanfora is that #Cardinals DC Ray Horton could wind up heading to the #Browns for those hot for Horton.

Mully said Trestman could be the McClellin of coaches. Emery thinks he is the smartest guy in the room.

I fail to see any evidence that is the deal with McClellin. He was widely regarded as a late riser around the league. He was high second rounder at minimum by the time the draft rolled around. This wasn't some Jerry Angelo over-reach.

I felt like it still was a reach, even though I do remember he was a late riser.

the packers would have taken him in a second.

Yes, I think it would have made more sense for them.

I was thinking the same thing when I read that post.

I have to wonder why anybody is satisfied that we blew up our coaching staff and replaced it with a staff of Trestman, Hoke, and Kromer. I understand Emery is going to win championships, but I dont understand how this is a step in that direction.

Nobody is satisfied that the defensive staff left, but that wasn't a Bears choice, that was the coaches begging out because of loyalty to Lovie.

I don't see how Emery thinks he's the smartest guy in the room. He made a crack yesterday about how he was just a Phys Ed major and it takes him a while to figure things out. He seems quite humble.

I just think he has a thing for NFL outcasts like himself. And I think the McClellin pick was a combination of two things, very poorly misjudging who actually was the best player available, and an overly dogmatic insistence on always taking BPA even when it's almost certain you will regret that pick for your team. If the BPA is a QB and you have a QB you don't take the QB. Things like salary cap allocation and team need have to be taken into account. This isn't baseball where you have 6-8 years before you have to worry about finding a spot for a guy and can let him develop.

Our offense was the worst in the league under Lovie and he could not fix it. We were never going to win a championship with him. Is Trestman the answer? That remains to be seen.

I just don't see how anyone can say, right now, that Trestman is not going to succeed. How can anyone possibly know that. And if you don't know that, then you should at least give the guy a chance.

It was the Bears choice to fire Lovie and then hire a CFL coach who many NFL coaches likely view as unqualified to get the job. That was a good way of forcing your defensive staff's hands. You can't just make a "bold" choice without thinking about the ramifications.

And its Emery's job to know the expected turnover when Lovie was fired, and his job to retain guys of value to the team.

Im not sure we have the offensive personnel to have a good offense. Trestman could be set up to fail with this offense.

I believe the main factor in him departing was the fact that his buddy Monte Kiffin got the Dallas DC job out of nowhere. Otherwise I think he would be staying.

What? Cutler, Forte and Marshall is as good as any team in the league and an excellent starting point for fixing what remains of the offense.

It is also Emery's job to upgrade the offensive personnel to help ensure Trestman has what he needs.

Well, there's some assumption there, but I'll agree with your conclusion that you have to think about ramifications, but ultimately, the overhaul of the offense was the priority here.

I dont understand why you cant overhaul the offensive staff while leaving Lovie, Taub, and D coaches (likely retaining Hoke as the DB coach). Its almost impossible for me to believe that Trestman wouldnt accept the OC ("HC of the Offense") job here in chicago.

We have a mature team, so an overhaul with all new coaches (whom are all recieving huge promotions from all their prior jobs) is incredibly stupid. We are paying Lovie $5mln. Why not let him coach out the contract with trestman as OC and reevaluate after the season. We won 10 games last year and likely could have won 11-12 had Cutler stayed healthy or Hester not dropping that one pass. A few upgrades offensively and this was a contending team with the current staff in place.
