I want to punch that article in the face.

All it's going to do is force me to take a call from my brother saying "Looks like the Cubs are going after Stanton, huh?" and then I'll explain how it's nothing and he'll say "THE [expletive] ARTICLE SAYS WE'RE LOOKING INTO STANTON, HOW THE HELL ARE YOU SITTING HERE TELLING ME THEY'RE NOT DOING THAT"

Then we'll get into an argument which will end up with me calling him an [expletive] for believing what Phil Rogers writes, then he'll call me gay, tell me to go [expletive] myself, talk trash about Billy Beane and Moneyball, and hang up on me.

This was awesome.

Seriously... That sounds exactly like my brother. He's one of those guys who like to talk about sports and actually know quite a bit about it, but if that convo turns into anything related SABR/advanced stats/etc, it's like talking to a 2 year old throwing a hissy fit.

It's been discussed before, but I'm about as negative as you can get about Stanton. There are a lot of minor indications that he may not age gracefully. His size is a part of what allows him to generate such incredible power, but it also puts a tremendous amount of strain on his joints. I'm concerned not only with his ability to stay on the field, but also what effect his size may eventually have on his defense and baserunning - I'd even go so far as to say we've probably already seen him at his peak in both those respects. The BABIP is likely to be unsustainable at last year's .344 mark given his flyball tendencies. Sure, you can say he hits the hell out of the ball, but Adam Dunn (.288) and Jose Bautista (.270) don't exactly have sterling BABIPs. I'd also have hoped not to see his plate discipline regress this past season. He's also about to start getting expensive.

That said, he's still an easy 4-5 win player and if he stays healthier than I expect or somehow manages to cut down on the strikeouts, he could be in MVP consideration more often than not.

Given the PR hit they're currently taking, the Marlins would have to be absolutely overwhelmed to move Stanton now. This is not a great time to attempt to acquire him. The Cubs gain little hope of competing in 2013 even with Stanton, so they'd be smart to wait until next offseason to make their move. He should be cheaper then anyway, with one less year of team control and his salary beginning to escalate. It's not like extending him will be an option for the Marlins at any point.

I appreciate the sentiment behind the posts that say things like "blank check" - I'd love to see the Cubs putting a more competitive team out there. But I anticipate most teams will attempt to wait out the Marlins. I'd like to see the Cubs get the best deal possible.

Rob,

Those are all good points. I wouldn't offer up a blank check at this time, either. And I also believe that he would be cheaper to acquire from Miami next year.

However, if the Marlins are set on moving him at this time to maximize the return I would be disappointed if the Cubs were not serious bidders.

Yeah, I figured I couldn't be the only one with a sibling like this. My brother thinks since he played baseball in high school back in the late 90's he's got some sort of leg up on baseball knowledge. He was the athlete... ironically I was the computer geek. So... stereotypes and all that.

Absolutely agree. If now is the time, act.

I just sincerely doubt now is the time. The Marlins asking price has to be insane with their PR situation. And the teams with the pieces to do something (Texas) are generally the well-run types that would rather wait one season than overpay.

I don't think Jeffrey Loria gives a damn about PR.

Baez, Vogelbach, Barney, Castillo, and we take back Nolasco for additional salary relief.

Hahaha yea it'd be a bit late to start now

Perhaps PR was the wrong word.

Loria has one remaining marketable asset. And who better than Cubs fans to recognize what a superstar hitting towering home runs can do for attendance and merchandise sales?

There may also be some slight need to placate Bud Selig by not making a complete and utter mockery of his franchise (if he hasn't already).

Superstars hitting towering home runs are much more of a financial engine in Chicago than Miami. The impact for the individual team wouldn't be as big down there, and the same for the impact to the league as a whole. Sammy Sosa hitting 66 Home Runs is much more exciting for MLB if it's happening for the Cubs than it would be for the Marlins.

Stanton is massively under appreciated and not very well known by the casual MLB fan base. If he was on the Cubs, he would be one of the biggest and most well known stars in the league.

Our entire farm system and Tony Campana for Stanton, LoMo, and Turner. Overpay for Michael Bourn or BJ Upton. Extend Garza and Samardzjia. Sign Edwin Jackson or Brandon McCarthy. Trade Soriano and DeJesus for the best young pitching offered. Restock farm system with organizationals, reclamations, and depth. Be awesome for the next 5-7 years. Worry about what happens 5-7 years from now in 4-6 years.

Yeah keeping Stanton will probably help the Marlins attendance by roughly 9 people.

This sounds about right to me too.

If that's all it took it should have been done already. My guess is they'd want one of Rizzo/Castro +2 of Baez/Soler/Almora as a bare minimum. I wouldn't be surprised if it was something like Rizzo/Samadzija/Soler.

Soler and Almora can't be traded yet, unless I am mistaken.

And I don't think the problem would be what the Marlins want, but rather what other teams would offer. Either way, nothing would be "done already" with so much time left for a bidding war to break out.
