I want to punch that article in the face.

All it's going to do is force me to take a call from my brother saying "Looks like the Cubs are going after Stanton, huh?" and then I'll explain how it's nothing and he'll say "THE [expletive] ARTICLE SAYS WE'RE LOOKING INTO STANTON, HOW THE HELL ARE YOU SITTING HERE TELLING ME THEY'RE NOT DOING THAT"

Then we'll get into an argument which will end up with me calling him an [expletive] for believing what Phil Rogers writes, then he'll call me gay, tell me to go [expletive] myself, talk trash about Billy Beane and Moneyball, and hang up on me.

Even though Castro is great, I don't even think they'd want Castro because he already got paid. Rizzo hasn't been paid yet so the likely cost would be. Rizzo + our top 5 most controllable highest value prospects or young players. They want cheap, controlable top 100 types. And probably a handful of them. Cubs won't give that up and Marlin's won't buckle without it. This probably doesn't even need to be said. But you can tell that to your brother and have him smoke it.

Next offseason, this seems much more likely. On both ends. Stanton will hit arb, probably get 7-8 mill. Baez should be finishing his season in AA and its not a stretch to say he could easily be a top 10 prospect. Almora is likely finishing the year in A+ himself and could easily be considered a top 25 guy in his own right by then. Add in Vogelbach, who is probably even money to be a top 100 guy next year at this time as well, not sure who'd bother trying to top that kind of offer. Hell, we possibly could get away with Baez, Vogelbach, and some others, not named Soler or Almora by then.

The Marlins aren't going to want a pile of prospects. Good young MLBers are worth more than prospects.

and that preference has been shown time and time again, in their trading for Andrew Miller, Hanley Ramirez, Cameron Maybin, Jacob Turner, Jake Marisnick, Justin Nicolino...

Yeah, think about all the utterly elite assets they sent out in those trades...

The package they got for Miguel Cabrera was kind of a joke

At the time of the trade, weren't Miller and Maybin consensus top 15-20 (possibly top 10) prospects in all of baseball?

Yeah, but in theory Baez might be there at this point next offseason, and maybe Almora too (though I doubt it).

If the Marlins want to give us Albert Pujols for Juan Cruz and Hee Seop Choi, I'm all on board. I can't believe it would be that cheap.

It's a bit hyperbolic, but Stanton's age 22 season is actually a bit better. That's the level of talent we're dealing with here.

Pujols - 6.0 WAR (2002)

Stanton - 5.8 WAR (2012)

Also, there are plenty of reasons that there is little chance in hell that he'll have a career anything like Albert's.

EDIT - I was being a smart ass here and trying to make an analogy with Stanton's injuries (and time missed in that season) and Kyle's views on variance, but I think it's too subtle....

Yea. We only got Derrek Lee for one of those guys.

Lee had one season in his entire career as good as what Stanton has already done.

2005 Derrek Lee was so damn sexy, god damn mother [expletive] Furcal :banghead:

It's not like an equivalent to Hee Seop Choi by himself could pry Stanton off the Marlins, though. Come on, man.

Point was: if prospects can get you Stanton, it's a steal, no matter who the prospects are.

Maybe not 2002 Mark Prior or 2011 Bryce Harper... but still probably.

Marlins Will Listen On Giancarlo Stanton

By Zach Links [December 30, 2012 at 10:29am CST]

In the wake of the Marlins' blockbuster deal with the Blue Jays, the Marlins publicly stated that they wouldn't trade Giancarlo Stanton.  Assistant General Manager Dan Jennings says that the club isn't shopping the right fielder, but they will listen to all offers for him, according to Jim Bowden of SiriusXM (on Twitter).

Here we go again. Anyone can listen to offers on anyone. However, my assumption is that any proposals not starting with something along of Profar/Olt or Bundy/Machado won't be heard.
