ABTY says Dempster has received death threats, is very shaken, and blames the Braves even more for the leak. Seems to think it will cost the foundation money. Basically no way he accepts trade to ATL now.

Pffft. That's just reasonable fan concern. Nothing wrong with that!

Who said the death threats came from Cubs fans? I know some Braves fans who are pissed that Dempster turned them down.

Dempster isn't black or any other kind of minority (other than ginger and Canadian) so that rules out Cubs fans as leaving threats. They only do that to the colored's

Forearm cramps? His current setback at the moment is tricep cramps, is it not?

well I don't remember exactly, some sort of premenstrual thing in his arm

A tricep cramp is probably nothing, and even Garza said it was weird but he'd be okay, and all the x-rays came back negative. You're acting like if he doesn't make ONE good start then no one will want to trade for one and a half years of his services. I think that's a little over the top. Teams can still trade for him based on his credentials and his performance history, and if there's an issue with his health, that's what physicals are for.

I just don't see how there is a 0% chance we could trade Garza UNLESS he makes his next start and is healthy. If he were a half season rental I could see the concern, but teams would get him for one more year and are able to obtain a draft pick as compensation if they let him leave. I don't see how that doesn't still have value to teams.

I'd hate for my GM to be such a risk taker that he trade top notch prospects for Matt Garza right now.

Also this was posted on Roto a couple hours ago, but didn't see it in the thread (may not have gone back far enough)

Buster Olney of ESPN.com reports that the Dodgers are "increasingly confident" they'll be able to acquire Ryan Dempster from the Cubs.

It may be the only option for the Cubs, as Dempster has made it clear that he would prefer to pitch in Los Angeles rather than Atlanta. Braves general manager Frank Wren said during a radio appearance on Wednesday morning that the team has already "moved on" from a possible deal that would have sent right-hander Randall Delgado to Chicago.

Yeah I bet they are increasingly confident knowing they are the only team Dempster seems willing to go to, and knowing that the Cubs will get laughed at if they try to hold out for Zach Lee any longer.

Keep him and offer him arbitration. They can have him then.

And if the physical shows he's not healthy it gets voided. He currently has a non-injury, I think you're overreacting a bit. Trading Garza is still a very real possibility. Maybe not to the Braves, but he can still be moved. The extra year of control still holds value.

Color me skeptical that Dempster is getting death threats.

I wouldn't be at all shocked if people have sent him all kinds of crazy stuff on Twitter, including death threats.

Of course they are increasingly confident. Did Olney need to actually talk to someone before posting that? Talk about stating the obvious.

Jacque Jones, Milton, Hawkins all claimed they received death threats/hate mail while on the Cubs. Can't think of any white dudes who have.

My concern isn't just trading Garza, it's getting top value for him. I'm sure someone will still take Garza off our hands, but will we still get elite type prospects for him after a down year and with a (slight) injury lingering? I tend to doubt it.

I'm pretty sure he was taking a jab at you for your misuse of an apostrophe. Coloreds is plural, colored's is possessive.

But both are racist!

Yeah, he can be traded. But you'd be an idiot to offer up top notch prospects for him while he's injured in the middle of a down year. If the Cubs can't get top prospects for him they shouldn't trade him. It's not about whether or not they can move him, it's whether or not they can get top value in return. Short of top value there is no reason to move him.

I have no doubt that people say all kinds of crazy stuff on Twitter, but I doubt it's any worse than what he receives after a bad performance. The typical meathead reaction to this kind of stuff is " I like Dempster, he seems like the kinda guy I could have a beer with at the Cubby Bear. Why are we giving away a good Cub pitcher for some no name prospect who won't pan out? " 95% of the Cub fanbase doesn't have the foggiest idea who Randall Delgado is, much less believe he's worthy of sending deaththreats over.

This sounds like the kind of hysterics and persecution complex that comes from a player who claims he's been "blindsided" in a trade that has been in the works, and one he's been kept abreast of, for weeks.

There are more than enough people pissed at him over this for their to be lunatics (or just assholes) sending something that could be construed as a death threat.
