Am I missing something? The Cubs pretty much have to trade at least one of Marshall/Marmol. Marshall is one of the best relievers in baseball and is a FA after this season. Somebody will make him their closer (and give him closer money). So we can either trade him now and get something, trade Marmol and extend Marshall (who would be our new closer), or let Marshall walk after the season (for which we would not get any compensation under the new CBA).

As sad as that is, you are dead on. The Cubs would be smart to trade Marmol and Marshall. I do think they could do much better than Travis Wood though for both of them.

I suppose we could also pay for two closers... but with as many holes as this team has, does anybody really think the bullpen is a great place to be allocating all our resources?

Even if the goal was to be competitive in 2012 I don't think trading Marshall would be a bad idea at all, for the reasons you stated. And his trade value is pretty damned high right now, so unloading him now might result in a net gain.

Personally, I'd trade Marshall this offseason and Marmol at the deadline (assuming he has a better season). We have young relievers with late inning potential in the system.

But I do think Marshall is pretty much a must-trade.

I wouldn't trade Marshall now anyway. assuming he doesn't suddenly become horrible, cubs could get so much more at the deadline from some desperate fringe playoff team needing a bullpen lefty.

marmol's a different story, because there's a good chance his arm is already half detached.

The Cubs already have Travis Wood in Randy Wells, they don't need another one. That would be a terrible return for Sean Marshall, unless the Reds are throwing in some good prospects.

Let's trade Randy Wells to the Cubs to get Randy Wells.

I was always under the impression that Travis Wood wasn't very good. I know he had a good year in 2010, but his stuff looks like he should put up numbers like 2011. Mediocre fastball, strong changeup. Has good, but not great control. Decent, but nothing special ability to miss bats. Just seems like a lot of other mediocre LHPs hanging around the MLB. Sean Marshall should command more than that.

Honest question... Is there any actual evidence to back up the old "get more for pitchers/relievers/lefties at the deadline" theory? I'd be really interested to know.

Marmol is a dicey issue. He could have a strong first half an boost his value, or he could have a shitty first half, confirming that he's damaged goods and obliterating his value.

if the cubs are going with the "don't try to win until 2015" plan, they sure as hell better trade marshall.

if we're not going to win till 2015, we should probably see about trading castro as well, to be honest. a huge portion of his value is getting lots of wins out of him while paying him less than a million dollars. if we're just going to waste all those years anyway, we ought to see if we can get future value for current value we've no use for.

yeah, it would be pretty depressing for the cubs to waste the cheap years of the best young hitter they've had in a million years.

FFS can we stop comparing every non front end starter to Randy Wells? I'd have interest in Wood but not for

Marshall. Id shop him to TB and see if we could work out a deal for Wade Davis though. However, if Wood is the best we could get for Marshall I'd go for it. Marshall could be in for a much higher payday than we're willing to give him. To bad Hendry couldn't have given him an extension instead of throwing money at John Grabow for no good reason.

In this case, I'd think Marshall would have quite a bit more value now because at the deadline he'd only be under team control for half of a season.

good point... didn't consider that.

Your right, Wells has actually had a better season than Wood has had. But they are both underwhelming starting pitchers that have at least one season well above their perceived ability. Point still stands that Wood is a terrible return for Marshall.

The Cubs would be trading a ERA+ 160 pitcher for an ERA+86 pitcher. Please no.

I don't think they can reasonably expect an SP with MLB success and ace upside in return for one year of Marshall, but at the same time it'd be nice if they got an SP that could actually throw hard. Toronto is still looking for a reliever, right? I think I'd rather try to pick off an excess SP from there than Cincinnati.

If your referring to Davis, it wouldn't be a straight up deal, but TB would be the perfect trading partner for us. They're looking to move Davis or Niemann, I'd much prefer Davis as well as Brignac, who seems like the type Theo would be interested in. They're looking for back end relievers as well as a starting catcher and offense in general. Would Soto and Marshall for Davis and Brignac be reasonable? Anything either side would need to add? I mentioned this before but something like Marshall/Marmol, Soto, and Jackson for Upton and Davis could be the starting point to an interesting blockbuster with some additional pieces changing hands as well. I could see them being interested in working Soriano into it assuming we pick up most if the bill.

And now we are the team who gets to deal our good players. Not saying I am against this, but we certainly aren't the aggressive team this winter, we are quickly turning into the team that signs wash-ups and pillaged for good talent.

Here's looking to a strong 2012, if we win 65 it may be a miracle.

Why in the hell are you all about Wade Davis now?

Wade Davis has a higher career FIP than Casey Coleman. He doesn't strike anybody out. He doesn't even throw hard. Unless we have a pitching coach or a scout that sees something that could make a huge difference, there is absolutely no reason at all to give up anything of even the slightest amount of value for Wade Davis. I know he was a prospect at one point, but he's just a below average major league starter now.

Just to play devil's advocate, couldn't the increased need of a team in a close race balance out, if not overcome the value of an extra half a year?

Man, I hope we'd be getting more than Wood for Marshall. I'd rather have B grade minor leaguer myself, someone with a little more upside than what Wood has. But, I guess he could just be a piece and we'd be getting a solid prospect as well.

Anyone think Theo could spin Wood to SD in Rizzo deal? Since we don't have an abundance of young starters.

That seems possible. Wood and Petco would be a good match. Certainly more than GAB.

Lets hope this report of dealing him to the reds was Theo using the media to pressure the the padres into dealing rizzo or the angels into dealing Morales. Hopefully the latter.
