I don't mind trading Sean Marshall, and with our depth of lefty pen arms, we should be okay in the pen. That said, never been a big fan of Travis Wood, and I hope the 2 prospects make this trade more palatable. It's not that Wood doesn't have some value - 5 cost-controlled years of a guy with the potential to fill a back of the rotation slot is valuable, and perhaps that allows them to save some money and move on from Randy Wells if they decide to, but Marshall's one of the best relief arms available and the ceiling's just not big enough for my liking. Ideally, we grabbed someone like Corcino or Gregorius to make this trade happen, but my guess is that since it's 2 prospects coming back and the reports suggest Wood as the centerpiece, we probably get guys a bit lower than that.

If this is the first of "trading off our assets", I guess we can assume Fielder won't be a Cub. Starting to feel like the Cubs of the 1950s when the only drama was whether they could escape the cellar.

While Theo takes his time to analyze everything, 4 days ago he probably could have traded Garza and Marshall to the Reds for Boxberger, Grandal, Wood, and Alonso.

James Russell, John Gaub, an Scott Maine are lefty pen arms. Sean Marshall is one of the top set up men in the game who happens to throw with his left arm.

There's a pretty decent chance that this deal doesn't make us any worse for next year(Wood returning to 2010 form at age 25, and Cashner playing up in the pen). Maybe if they deal a SP and/or outfielder for prospects, but as it stands, Marshall is going to give some team one year of awesome and then get paid. Getting 4 years of a decent SP and two other guys is a pretty good value for both now and later.

I don't disagree with that (hence why I think the return should be better than Wood and average prospects), but our pen can be fine if the lefties fill their role and Woody is fine as a setup arm.

I'm not too bummed that he didn't do that. It was a good deal for the Padres, but I don't know how much sense Grandal makes for us and he's chip number 2.

Filling a major hole for a divisional rival seems like a pretty good sign they are waving the white flag on 2012.

If they are going to do that, fine I guess, I like Wood for Marshall quite a bit. I don't quite get the Maholm/Wells comparisons. He strikes out a lot more batters than either.

Five years of cost-controlled starting pitching is something this team desperately needs.

Not really getting these Randy Wells comparisons. Wood is almost 5 years younger (and is still 2 years younger than Wells was when he had his great year) and has better #'s in the minors along with the aforementioned strike outs.

Jerry Crasnick @jcrasnick

#Cubs have talked to both Maholm and Francis about filling a spot at back end of the rotation. Wood younger and cheaper

I was aware of Maholm, but not Francis.

I hate to part with Marshall but Wood definitely interests me, i do hope aleast one of the 2 prospects coming with is top 10.

I think we will be very busy from here until Feb, this roster will look crazy different.

If the Cubs get one of the Reds' top ten prospects, I might have to drive to Chicago and give Theo and Jed some hugs.

i guess a cost controlled version of paul maholm is better than spending a lot of money on paul maholm

I'd rather spend money on Paul Maholm than give up one of our top 3 trade chips for the cost effective version. I really can't believe that the best we could get for even 1 year of Marshall was a 4 starter. Mike Leake I would have accepted happily. Hell, even Homer Bailey's only 25. I guess we should just wait and see who the minor leaguers are before judging the deal. The thing is, they already gave up 3 of their top 6 prospects in the Latos trade, so I don't know how much more they'll be willing to give up from their farm. Warning: if anyone even mentions Chris Heisey I'll throw a brick through their window. He's basically a younger Ryan Spilborghs.

Honestly, the best offer 29 other teams could muster for Sean Marshall is Travis [expletive] Wood? This reminds me of a Hendry trade.

Awesome. the Epstein/Hoyer tandem is looking solid so far.

Here's a fun exercise.

198 IP, 2.41 K/BB, 1.00 HR/9, 3.95 ERA, 3.94 FIP, 3.76 xFIP, 3.6 WAR

208 IP, 2.45 K/BB, 0.82 HR/9, 4.18 ERA, 3.75 FIP, 4.30 xFIP, 3.3 WAR

205 IP, 2.42 K/BB, 0.92 HR/9, 3.59 ERA, 3.98 FIP, 4.14 xFIP, 3.4 WAR

One of these is Travis Wood's MLB career. Another is Derek Holland last year, and the other is Mark Buehrle last year.

Yeah, but Wood's career numbers are the average of only 2 seaosons, one of which was a very strong rookie year, the other was a mediocre at best 2011. Also, I cheated and BBRd it and they say Wood has a career 1.5 WAR.

Oh, and per BBR, on his simalirity score through age 24, number 2 is wait for it, Pat Maholm. Then again, number 4 is Ricky Romero, so who knows. Still, how expensive could Maholm have been that they'd rather give up Marshall for a very similar pitcher?
