Per le rotoworld:

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that the Cubs are drawing heavy trade interest in left-hander Sean Marshall.

Marshall has emerged as one of the better relievers in the game over the past two seasons, posting a 2.45 ERA and 169/42 K/BB ratio over 150 1/3 innings. The 29-year-old southpaw is due $3.1 million in 2012 and is scheduled to hit free agency next offseason, so the Cubs might cash him in for prospects if the right offer comes along.

How do you guys feel about this? As great of a value as Sean Marshall has been for the Cubs, logic dictates that as soon as you can get prospects for a reliever, you do it. Toronto seems to need another lefty reliever. Could the Cubs package them Garza and Marshall for a boatload of prospects?

As long as he's valued properly, it wouldn't be a bad idea. And by valued properly I mean treated like the best reliever in Major League Baseball, who will be paid 3.1 million dollars next year.

Could be a misconception, but seems like value is higher at midseason.

Quite possibly. That'd be a great thing for someone to do a front page article about.

Garza and Marshall for Snider, Alvarez, Syndergaard, and Nicolino. Spin something off to San Diego for Rizzo.

I tend to think trading them separately is likely to net a better return for the organization, even if the additional value is simply depth pieces.

Maybe so. I think Syndergaard, Nicolino, and Hutchison are all potential studs. Not sure any of them actually even hit the top 100's this year, but all 3 look like they could be top of the rotation guys in a few years. Theo may want guys closer to the bigs though. I'm not really a fan of McGuire personally. Jenkins either.

What about trying him as a starter? But yea, I'm for trading him.

As a buddy noted on twitter recently, CJ Wilson moved to the rotation at about the age Marshall is now.

Has Wilson ever have the arm troubles Marshall has had? Plus Wilson was never quite as dominant as a reliever as Marshall is. Usually a starter is more valuable than a reliever, but Marshall is so elite in the bullpen that he'd have to be a really good starter to be more valuable there. The likelihood that he would be IMO is not worth risking it.

200 innings of completely league average pitching would equal his value from last year, and he was the 3rd most valuable reliever in baseball.

The smart move would have been to sign him last year at good reliever rates and try to convert him.

There's less than 50 completely league average starters?

He's not going to get to 200 innings anytime soon.

Also, I assume that would equal the same WAR? Tell me if that's wrong. If so, that doesn't take into account roster spot/playing time/positional scarcity. It's easier to find players that can give you average starting innings then one who can be a reliever as dominant as Marshall. Especially for a big market team like the Cubs, it doesn't make sense to turn an elite player into an average one because they can go out and find other starting pitchers with their money that can be average to pair with their elite reliever.

Reds looking at Marshall per Rosenthal

http://mlbbuzz.yardbarker.com/blog/mlbbuzz/reds_cubs_talking_trade/8859868?new_post=true

The Reds, continuing their search for bullpen help, are talking to the Cubs about a trade for left-hander Sean Marshall, according to major-league sources.

The Cubs are targeting left-hander Travis Wood, a pitcher who intrigued team president Theo Epstein last season when Epstein was GM of the Red Sox, sources say.

It is not known whether other players might also be part of the deal.

If Wood is the pitcher he was in 2010, that's a great move.

If he's the Wood from 2011, I'd rather try to snag a nice upside prospect elsewhere.

hahahah the cubs have to sell their good expensive players to real teams like the reds

The sources that leaked the possible deal didn't say one way or the other about any other players that would be involved, they just named Marshall and Wood as the key pieces. (ETA - according to mlbtr)

if the cubs are going with the "don't try to win until 2015" plan, they sure as hell better trade marshall.

if we're not going to win till 2015, we should probably see about trading castro as well, to be honest. a huge portion of his value is getting lots of wins out of him while paying him less than a million dollars. if we're just going to waste all those years anyway, we ought to see if we can get future value for current value we've no use for.

Am I missing something? The Cubs pretty much have to trade at least one of Marshall/Marmol. Marshall is one of the best relievers in baseball and is a FA after this season. Somebody will make him their closer (and give him closer money). So we can either trade him now and get something, trade Marmol and extend Marshall (who would be our new closer), or let Marshall walk after the season (for which we would not get any compensation under the new CBA).

The Cubs already have Travis Wood in Randy Wells, they don't need another one. That would be a terrible return for Sean Marshall, unless the Reds are throwing in some good prospects.
