Yeah, but Wood's career numbers are the average of only 2 seaosons, one of which was a very strong rookie year, the other was a mediocre at best 2011.

It's not an average, that's the point.

I guess I don't quite get how all of the advanced stats work. Still, I'll wait to see who the prospects are before passing judgment, although I think that we'd get top value if we packaged him with Soto or Garza. There's 0 urgency to trade Marshall, so I'll trust that we're getting something decent in return or else we'd be shopping him more, especially since we're dealing within the division. Even if he has been shopping him and this was the best offer he might have more value in July, or at least not any less.

I hate to part with Marshall but Wood definitely interests me, i do hope aleast one of the 2 prospects coming with is top 10.

I think we will be very busy from here until Feb, this roster will look crazy different.

If the Cubs get one of the Reds' top ten prospects, I might have to drive to Chicago and give Theo and Jed some hugs.

Why?

You don't need to understand advanced stats to understand that the numbers were not an average of his 2 seasons. That's his MLB career which includes his "medicore at best 2011".

While Theo takes his time to analyze everything, 4 days ago he probably could have traded Garza and Marshall to the Reds for Boxberger, Grandal, Wood, and Alonso.

I'm not too bummed that he didn't do that. It was a good deal for the Padres, but I don't know how much sense Grandal makes for us and he's chip number 2.

Grandal opens up the possibility of trading Soto (for decent prospects), while Boxberger/Carpenter/Cashner compete for the closer's role freeing up Marmol as a trade chip (for decent prospects). Obviously Alonso takes over 1B and Wood slides into the back of the rotation.

Is Latos that much better than Garza that we hve to give up both he and Marshall for essentially the same package -Volquez /+Wood?

Funny, taking a look at Redszone, they're pissed about potentially giving up 4 years of Wood for 1 year of Marshall. Of course, they keep throwing around the word "middle reliever" as a pejorative term when Marshall is one of the 5 best relievers in baseball, and our old friend Reds44 seems to be leading that charge. We all have our own lens on things, I guess.

That's exactly what i was thinking. If I were a Reds fan I'd be unhappy with the notion of giving up a young SP who we can control for 5 years plus two prospects for one year of Marshall, even if Marshall is one of the best in the game. On the flipside, we don't like it because we think Sean has a lot of value and Wood is probably at best a 3rd starter.

Let's wait and see what prospects we get back. My guess would be one in the lower end of their Top 20 and a raw, hard-throwing single A pitcher.

BTW, one of Wood's comparators according to Baseball Reference is Charlie Leibrandt. I'd definitely take that.

That's a cool word.

Not sure that I used it appropriately in that context, but thanks...I think.

Probably not, but everybody loves to jump all over me if I propose a deal that favors the Cubs so I left it favoring the Reds.

The big surprise here is that there's been 3 pages of Marshall to the Reds talk yet not a single crack about Dusty and his arm falling off.

That's because Dusty will use him strictly as a situational lefty.

I feel bad for Marshall if Dusty does indeed decide to use him as a LOOGY.

Why is Dusty's arm falling off?

Eye on Baseball @EyeOnBaseball

I've been told the #Reds-#Cubs Wood-Marshall deal is not as 'close' as reported. certainly nowhere near done....

That's a CBS Sports twitter account for those inquiring minds.

PSD insider who knows his stuff, said he's heard Hamilton could be one of the minor leaguers.

Wow. BA had him at #2 before the Latos trade. Rated as best athlete and fastest base runner.

If this is the first of "trading off our assets", I guess we can assume Fielder won't be a Cub. Starting to feel like the Cubs of the 1950s when the only drama was whether they could escape the cellar.

There's a pretty decent chance that this deal doesn't make us any worse for next year(Wood returning to 2010 form at age 25, and Cashner playing up in the pen). Maybe if they deal a SP and/or outfielder for prospects, but as it stands, Marshall is going to give some team one year of awesome and then get paid. Getting 4 years of a decent SP and two other guys is a pretty good value for both now and later.

Obviously we don't know all the details, but, roughly, I like this deal. Marshall is very good, but I'd trade one year of great relief pitching for four years of (likely) decent-or-better starting pitching basically all the time. Especially consdering the Cubs have evidently decided to suck this year.

Yep, the money psd insider said he heard hamiltons name could be coming our way. These are the kind of details he's usually on spot with every time.

Ps, check out the redszone discussion on this. They really hated wood for Marshall for about 5 pages and were hoping they were getting something else. They are going to go beserk if Hamilton ends up really being involved.

I know hamiltons a controversial prospect, but this deal turns into a fleecing if he's involved at least from a value perspective at this point in time.
