Stole over 100 bases; struck out over 100 times; walked over 50. .278/.340/.360 at A-ball; will be 21 years old this coming year.

He stole a base almost 50% of the time he reached based.

He also scored approximately half of the time that he reached base.

Pretty amazing numbers.

You do realize that him scoring that often only has a small amount to do with his ability right? The SB numbers are impressive though.

I disagree, in most cases you may be right, but the fact that he puts himself into scoring position that often and apparently has good speed is pretty indicative of a guy that will score a lot of runs.

So he's Joey Gathright/Felix Pie reincarnated. Wait, don't we already have Tony Campana?

what the [expletive] does he actually have in common with Felix Pie???

Speed, strikes out twice as often as he walks, no power.

Pie put up a .468 slugging performance in the minors

Not really getting these Randy Wells comparisons. Wood is almost 5 years younger (and is still 2 years younger than Wells was when he had his great year) and has better #'s in the minors along with the aforementioned strike outs.

I didn't mean to compare them directly. I just meant that I don't think the ceilings of either guy is more than an end of the rotation, innings eating type of arm.

in their best respective seasons in the minors, Hamilton totalled 71 more steals than Pie (yet only 2 more CS); it's laughable to categorize their speed as being remotely similar

While Theo takes his time to analyze everything, 4 days ago he probably could have traded Garza and Marshall to the Reds for Boxberger, Grandal, Wood, and Alonso.

I'm not too bummed that he didn't do that. It was a good deal for the Padres, but I don't know how much sense Grandal makes for us and he's chip number 2.

Grandal opens up the possibility of trading Soto (for decent prospects), while Boxberger/Carpenter/Cashner compete for the closer's role freeing up Marmol as a trade chip (for decent prospects). Obviously Alonso takes over 1B and Wood slides into the back of the rotation.

It wasn't Soto that I was focusing on. I'm not sure Grandal is significantly better than Castillo to justify using a Garza trade to gain a C. Castillo's also closer to being ready.

Yep, the money psd insider said he heard hamiltons name could be coming our way. These are the kind of details he's usually on spot with every time.

Ps, check out the redszone discussion on this. They really hated wood for Marshall for about 5 pages and were hoping they were getting something else. They are going to go beserk if Hamilton ends up really being involved.

I know hamiltons a controversial prospect, but this deal turns into a fleecing if he's involved at least from a value perspective at this point in time.

If It's Hamilton, you make the trade in a heartbeat just to have a chance at that upside. I'm not a huge fan of Hamilton, but that would definitely make this trade a good one because the upside is so tantalizing.

Phil Rogers mentioned in his column today this move could lead to a flurry of deals for Theo. I know it's Rogers, but I'd really like to see some things start happening. He even mentioned Matt Harrison for Byrd and other stuff, maybe Wells. I wish he was right for once.

I'd take Harrison for Byrd in a heartbeat. I'd be mighty surprised if Jon Daniels and Co. agreed to that.

im not into billy hamilton at all

To be honest, gut guess and I'd say I'm not sure Hamilton becomes anything more than a fringe starter, but he has the potential to be a lot more, and it's a worthy gamble (and heck of a good trade) if you get Wood and Hamilton in a package. Heck, I wouldn't even need a third prospect.

Cubs and Reds agree in principle to trade sending Sean Marshall to cinci for lefty Travis Wood and 2 minor leaguers.

Trade has been completed.

Marshall for Wood + prospects per ESPN 1000

any detail on secondary pieces? That's going to make or break the trade for me.

Indeed.

At first blush, I felt the Cubs could get more for Marshall than Travis Wood, so I'm very interested to see who the other two prospects are.

What the heck do they see in Travis Wood to make this deal?

cost controlled league average left handed starter.

i'm going to assume that theo and jed were mainly interested in the prospects, so i won't judge yet

Young. Under team control until 2016. Decent pedigree as a 2nd round pick. Had previous success at the minor league level until struggling mightily last year. Buy low candidate.

Still sounds pretty risky to me. I would want some good prospects along with him.

While I've sort of bashed Wood, he has a lot of value. 5 cost-controlled years of a guy who looks capable of being a 5th starter, if not a 4th, is quite valuable. He's also ready to step in soon, perhaps freeing them up to move Randy Wells for some more savings. Perhaps whatever savings they make get re-invested elsewhere. It seems that the general feeling that the media is putting out is that the Cubs FO were quite frustrated by the new rules, and they may view selling off some valuable pieces, but replaceable assets, as a way to restock the system. I mean, I don't think our pen is going to be that hurt, provided it's managed well. Everything depends on Marmol being solid, but Wood, perhaps Cashner, perhaps Carpenter, should offer enough power setup arm potential, and there's enough lefties to match up.

My issue with Wood is that, I'd rather trade for higher upside, even if it's riskier, but Wood does have quality value to a team.

5 cost controlled years of a 24 year old left handed starter who has 3.3 WAR in 208.2 IP.

The recently acquired Mat Latos had 3.2 WAR in 194.1 IP last season, just as a reference.

If you think Wood's true talent level is somewhere right in the middle of his last two years, and that he can throw 200 IP in a season, he's a hell of a piece to get.

What was left in the Reds system after the deal for Latos?

Well ... some decent positional assets. The system was over-hyped at the beginning of the off-season, IMO, anyways. They were dead thin on pitching (I mean, Corcino is arguably the top arm). Mesoraco is an untouchable and the starting C in 2012 for them, barring a surprise. AFter that, there's some MI's (Cozart, although he could be a major leaguer for them, and Hamilton/Gregorius lower). Nefatli Soto has good raw power, but I've never been a fan of his swing (well, never been big on his approach, or his ability to read pitches either). Yorman Rodriguez is toolsy, but really raw. Todd Frazier is basically a Ryan Flaherty type, someone the Cubs let walk. Dave Sappelt is ... not that interesting from a trade perspective (could become a depth OF type). Couple raw arms with upside in the lower levels, akin to what the Cubs have.

I feel like I'm missing a couple guys. There's ... uh ... Lotzkar, but I'm taking a wait and see on how he does as he moves up, as he was an older guy coming off injury in the lower levels. A couple midde infielders, but I can't think of their names right now.

All in all, a fairly weak system now.
