WHAT?!?! Soriano isn't on that list?!? Don't they know the Cubs can also throw in Reed Johnson or Jeff Baker?!?! OR BOTH?!?!

this also fails to take into account that teams will call the cubs asking to trade for garza and the cubs will decline, but since they already have the other team on the phone, they will be able to trade them soriano

I'm going to ignore the mockery and just say that a big reason why they don't see Soriano as likely to be traded is due to the contract. If the Cubs are in fact willing to eat a good 95+% of it, I'm going to say that he'd either crack that list or not be too far behind.

Yeah, no. Not unless throwing in another player is so that Soriano can receive their leg in a transplant.

Jokes aside, are you saying that if you were another club, you wouldn't take a risk on Soriano's knee for 5 million total over 2 1/2 years? That's a pretty small risk to take for a player who can still give you a decent reward if things continue to go right as they have in the first half of the year.

It's a small risk if they don't give up anything of real value; I think too many here are understating just how gimpy/on the verge of being done for a while he is.

Matsuzaka went on the DL today too, wouldn't mind seeing Boston get desperate right about now. As far as Soriano goes, with the lack of bats available I think we could get a surprising return from Tampa or Cleveland. Maybe our old friend, Wade Davis, if we throw Dolis in and eat lots of cash, because of Tampa's pitching depth.

I'd rather keep Dolis and cut Soriano than trade both for Wade Davis, to be honest.

I threw him out there as an example, but considering how bad our pen is, I'd be very happy with that type of return. Sub 3 ERA, a K per inning, and a 1.2 WHIP. I think he's a better bet to be a back end of the pen guy than Dolis.

Carpenter is now out for the year. Hope they give us a damn haul for either of our guys.

@Ken_Rosenthal: #STLCards definitely will look for starter with Carpenter out for season. Their strategy was contingent on his health. Want reliever too.

Like it or not, they could be the best fit. They have an incredibly deep farm system and have been hemmorhaging young players out of nowhere for the past few years now. I'd happily swing a deal with them for Garza and Marmol. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see them in on Hamels as well.

They have already shown that they are not afraid to deal within the division. If the Cardinals overpaid for Garza or Marmol I wouldn't object.

Have they? Here are the most recent trades by the Cards to each team in the division:

Cincinnati Reds (view 96 trades)

November 10, 1997: The St. Louis Cardinals traded Dmitri Young to the Cincinnati Reds for Jeff Brantley.

Houston Astros (view 32 trades)

August 19, 2010: The Houston Astros traded Pedro Feliz and cash to the St. Louis Cardinals for David Carpenter.

Milwaukee Brewers (view 21 trades)

August 27, 2003: The Milwaukee Brewers traded Mike DeJean to the St. Louis Cardinals for players to be named later. The St. Louis Cardinals sent Mike Crudale (September 10, 2003) and John Novinsky (minors) (September 10, 2003) to the Milwaukee Brewers to complete the trade.

Pittsburgh Pirates (view 64 trades)

By "they" I was referring to the Cubs new management and the Marshall trade to the Reds.

Just read that Middlebrooks may be DL bound with a bad hammy, with Nick Punto (and Lillibridge) as his immediate backup. May just need rest and to miss a couple games around the AS break, but if it's a tear, Sox have nobody on their 40 man, apparently, who can be called up w/o making a move on the 40 man. If we weren't contending with Stewart on the DL, could have expanded/accelerated a potential Garza package?

With a lot of teams in need of pitching, and some very unexpected potential sellers, July could be very interesting:

1. Hamels: definitely the top guy. Going by what they reportedly want in return, my guess is that the suitors will be limited to the Tiger, Rangers, Cardinals, and possibly Blue Jays

gap

Garza and Greinke: while Greinke is the better pitcher, this year anyway, Garza's extra year of team control could make him equally, if not more valuable. That and the fact that it gives the Cubs incentive to hold in. Even if an extension isn't in the cards, he'd be either valuable to us next year or would likely generate an equal return this winter to what he did now. Knowing this, it's hard to fault the Cubs for shooting for the moon if trading Garza. However, with The Brewers and Greinke, unless they get closer to contention that almost have to trade them to start fixing the barren wasteland that is their farm system. The afore mentioned teams who miss out on Hamels will likely scramble to get these 2.

Dempster, McCarthy, Wandy, Sanchez, Marcum: each of these should generate at least 1 guy from someone's Top 10 plus another high ceiling prospect or 2. Contenders in need of pitching, with weaker systems should all be in on these guys.

I wouldn't be surprised to see one of the teams with deeper systems go all in and acquire one of these 3 in addition to one of the bigger names.

That's awesome to hear. I kind of have it in my mind that he gets dealt this weekend for some reason. No idea why, but I see Kalish, Barnes, and Owens being the package we get.

Sub in Bradley for Owens and I'd be cool with that trade. Owens is too far away as a pitching prospect.
