Shields and Harrison were 9 area guys at the stage that Turner is at. But the delight you're taking in this has caused me to question my desire to give you a Call when I'm in Chicago this summer.

Then you don't get to go on my yacht.

Not saying it was or wasn't a good decision to wait, and we'll never know what was offered when other than an eventual trade that is accepted, but I kinda wish we'd traded Garza in the spring when he was coming off his best year and had 2 years of team control left.

2 years of team control and a pitcher coming off a 2.95 FIP season would probably net a bit more than 1.5 years of team control and a pitcher in the middle of a 4.04 FIP season.

Meh, if the Tigers and/or Blue Jays were really offering the types of packages rumored/speculated, it would have happened. The extra year of team control still argueably makes him the most valuable SP potentially available unless of course the Mariners finally decide to shop Felix.

You don't think our trading partners would be apprehensive about whether it was a breakout year for Garza or an outlier?

They probably would be, but the chance that it was just an outlier is higher now.

Latest from Roto

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that "about six teams" have been on the phone "consistently" with Cubs president Theo Epstein discussing a potential Matt Garza trade.

Cafardo writes that the Braves, Tigers, Cardinals, Red Sox, Jays, and Royals have had interest, "as far as we can tell." The Cubs have interest in signing Garza to a long-term extension, but Epstein and general manager Jed Hoyer will gauge the trade market for the right-hander. It will take a big package of prospects to get him

So Shelby Miller plus what?

Can you imagine the meatball insurgency that would follow Jed sending Garza to st. louis?

Obvious caveat that he's a 21 year old pitching in the PCL, but I must admit I had no idea Miller was struggling so badly.

obviously kidding about the throw-in part, but yeah, reports have not been good at all this year on miller.

Like what, obviously his stats are awful but is his velo down? Stuff not moving as much? or personal/off field stuff?

Goldstein:

The worst news is that his stuff is off significantly, as his fastball has lost a full grade from 2011, his curveball is not as crisp, and his changeup has slipped from average to fringy. Miller has been the top prospect in the St. Louis system since signing as a first-round pick in 2009, but if I were forced to rank today, he'd lose that crown.

Wasn't Miller just recently put on a no shake rule? Isn't that a bit odd for a guy in AAA? I'm not sure I'm interested in him headlining a package.

if he's that out of shape i can't believe that simply banning milkshakes is going to be enough

Miller's FB has been mostly 90-93 this year, versus 93-96 previously. Still K'ing over a batter an inning, but his control has gotten worse somewhat. His BBA is quite a bit worse compared to last year, .306 against .219. Yet his GB/FB ratio isn't much different. His last 6 starts, he's gone 25.2 IP, given up 36 hits, 27 earned runs, and has walked 13. He may very well turn thins around, but he can't be the main piece in a Garza deal, going through this stuff, no matter how good his stuff has been lreviously.

Reports are consistently 90-93 this year.

I doubt the Cards would dare trade Taveras to us. I like Kolten Wong and Tyrell Jenkins quite a bit. If I could get Miller and Rosenthal, I'd pull the trigger immediately. My guess is if you take Miller out, it's more in line with what they may be thinking though.

With so many teams in on the bidding, it's unlikely the Cards could offer up the best package considering they'd be trading within the division. On top of that, how much better would the Cardinals package have to be it to be worth giving them Garza?

Just slightly. It should be irrelevant, especially considering that it's doubtful that we'll be competing with them in the next 2 years.
