If Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein leaves for the Cubs, Ryne Sandberg will become the favorite to be named manager, according to Gordon Edes of ESPN Boston.

Epstein tried to hire Sandberg to manage Triple-A Pawtucket last winter. The move would obviously be popular in Chicago, where Sandberg is beloved. Sandberg managed Philadelphia's Triple-A squad this past season. He was named the Pacific Coast League's Manager of the Year in 2010 as skipper of Chicago's Triple-A affiliate.

i guess i'll accept that

It would be so bizarre if he did this.

Marketing/PR move to keep the meatheads happy while Theo can focus on rebuilding the organization from the minors up and hopefully have a consistent winner starting in a few years.

He wanted to hire him for a minor league job, that doesn't mean he would want him at the major league level.

Given the Red Sox/A's/etc. preference for a manager to simply be an extension of the GM, I could live with Sandberg as manager under Epstein. GMs are 10x more important than managers--pretty much any manager he hires will lose more games than he wins for the Cubs.

Why would it be just a marketing/PR move if he showed interest in him well before he took the job?

This is happening. I have no reservations that if the leaks are coming at this rate all of a sudden, it's done and the details are just being ironed out before the press conference.

I just want to type this because it seems so surreal: We have fully left the Jim Hendry Era of the Chicago Cubs and are about to enter the Theo Epstein era.

We're going to have a real organization, with top-notch statistical analysis and a modernized scouting program from top to bottom.

Jim Bowden apparently wrote an insider article about how Theo should beware of the GM spot in Chicago, because it's nothing like Boston.

I haven't read it and won't link to it, but if Jim Bowden thinks it's a bad idea, I'm driving the Epstein bandwagon.

He opens by essentially arguing that we're hiring MacPhail again. I'm not sure I even want to know what he thinks after that...

I would be completely fine with Sandberg if Theo wanted him.

I wouldn't be fine with it. But if a gm gets to hire and fire one guy before his own seat gets warm it might as well be the overwhelming fan favorite.

Sandberg would be a minor annoyance at worst. The important thing is having a guy who can construct a proper roster.

Plus, adding Epstein and Sandberg would all but guarantee 81 sellouts in 2012, and likely beyond.

oh lord what a stretch, just because he wanted him to manage a minor league team doesn't mean he thinks Sandberg os major league material. I don't think it'll happen.

I suspect many managers suddenly look real good because the players are given to them that win...

Give me the good GM first, I'll worry about managers later.

If true, brilliant to snag Theo and brilliant of Theo to go after Ryno. The pieces are falling perfectly in place. But until it's official, no celebrating just yet. Edited by Hollandsworth's mug

He'll want his own guy, and Sandberg is a Chicago icon. It's not a lock, but it's hardly a stretch.

It's possible that Ryno would listen to Theo as he has won championships, thus proving his philosophy works. Meatheads do listen to rings after all. Maybe Ryno, combined with a competent GM wouldn't be as disastrous as people believe. At least as far as how he manages. I too believe good players can make bad managers look good. Edited by bcl412

Talent can overcome a bad manager, look at Joe Girardi. He had Jeter bunting with nomouts and a guy on second during the alds. It just means we'll have a lot to talk about.

I can't imagine the animosity if he come's out after all this and says " Ive decided to stay in Boston because that's where my family is and my heart and roots are" or something of the sort. Just thinking about it now makes sick after all this thinking he's basically a lock to be GM now.

I wouldn't be too upset, in my mind this shows that Ricketts is serious about his search for a stats guy and what not. I believe that we get out of this with a good GM regardless of who it is.

All I really worry about with the manager is that the right people actually play (not asking that much) and that the arms of valuable starting pitchers, especially young ones, aren't abused. I'm not so sure he can manage that second part (most managers can't help themselves) but until he screws that up, if Theo hires him, he's fine with me.
