"We set a bad tone and we've got to stop, the balls in the sun and they're communicating... Cassie thought he had that all the way, I look back at this whole game, look back at that play, the sun's been in the same damn spot for however long as Wrigley field has been here, and those are the kinds of mistakes, there's certain ones you'll accept and there's other ones that have to be taken care of. Those are two talented kids in the middle of the diamond, and we make enough mistakes around, and we have to clean them up. Put the negativity behind us, play with some freakin intensity and continue to play the game the way we need to play, and we're not. And that's that's what we're looking for. It's not universal, we have to clean up some specific areas."

This is my transcript so it's probably not perfect.

First, stop calling the poor kid Cassie. That's a girl name. I'm sure he doesn't like it. But damn, the popup in the sun was 1 error, didn't Pena make two on one play? And wasn't there a couple big bombs from one guy from each side of the plate? And doesn't Soriano suck in Left? Didn't they only score one [expletive] run today? Hasn't Dempster been god fuckin awful all year? Why concentrate on Castro? Sure he made a fucked up play but why the hell does Quade stomp on castro so hard, and let's all the other [expletive] go? I don't like this at all. There was no room for this [expletive]. That's a manager who has melted down, not one that IS melting down.

I just thought this was poor [expletive] form. And castro and barney had a bad day in the field but what the hell? They did not cause the Cubs to lose 60 of 99 games.

No, he hasn't. He had a nightmare April but has been very good since.

Not the first time he's gone off on Castro. Seems peculiar to go after the young guys when others played rather poorly too.

a couple weeks back one of the morning radio shows was talking about how Quade seems to let the veterans off the hook when they play bad. Or at least he wont voice his displeasure to the media about it. Its seems like a peculiar way to manage a team that has had poor play from veterans and rookies alike.

Posted
It's typical. There's a whole "veteran disrespect" stigma in the MLB (and most sports frankly). And calling out a veteran is showing him up, while calling out a young guy is trying to help the guy play the game the right way or some BS.

wheels are coming off the Quade Wagon.

Agreed. I'll admit I was a supporter initially but his decision making, the way he handles the pitching staff, the double-standards all have worn thin. He was (and still is) a batter choice than Ryno but this needs to be his only year.

I'm not willing to make that conclusion. Quade has been awful. Sandberg may very well have been just as bad, but I doubt he could have been much worse.

Yep, I'm a huge Ryno as manager detractor, but I'm not so sure he wouldn't have been better in a vacuum. (He'd probably get a 2nd season though, so it was best we hired Quade to get him out of the way.)

"Let's put the negativity behind us, play with some freaking intensity, and continue to work on playing the game the way we need to play"

Awesome. If there is one thing that results in good baseball, it is intensity.

I watched the press conference on CSN after the game and it was aggravating. Its completely unfair to blame two young players for a 1st inning mistake in a 9-1 loss. Pretty much the whole team sucked today. And, as I've said before, the "Cassie" nickname is horrendous too. Quade's not responsible for this season being a disaster but he sure hasn't helped anything.

Yep. Shamelessly copy and pasted from a recent CubColtPacer post:

Here's April:

31 IP, 42 H, 34 R, 33 ER, 9 HR, 16 BB, 29 K, 9.58 ERA, 8.41 K/9, 4.65 BB/9, 2.61 HR/9

Since April:

88 1/3 IP, 82 H, 31 R, 29 ER, 5 HR, 24 BB, 82 K, 2.95 ERA, 8.35 K/9, 2.45 BB/9, 0.51 HR/9

Dempster's been pretty awesome for nearly 3 months now.

I think Quade is a meat head and is in way over his head.

I never thought Sandberg was the right guy for the job, but there's no way he would call out players like this in the media. Heck, I don't think you call any player out -- young or old. Those are club house / manager's office conversations and have no place in the media.

At this rate no one will want to play in Chicago, regardless of how much money is thrown around.

Well that's just not true, even if Quade was still the manager this offseason, which he almost certainly won't be.

Those numbers took a pretty big hit today. I hate those sorts of arguments, because all starting pitchers are capable of looking pretty good for long stretches between their bad outings.

Didn't see today's game, so I didn't take into account him getting roughed up in it - all I saw was that the Phillies scored 9 runs.

As for breaking down his numbers, I think it's important to note that his overall numbers are being hurt by a really horrid start. First off, it disproves the notion Darkside brought up that Dempster's been awful all year - he was only awful for a month. Second, three months of trending upward is a pretty significant fact to point out when trying to project a guy going forward.

Looking at it again,

Since April:

91 1/3 IP, 89 H, 37 R, 35 ER, 5 HR, 27 BB, 87 K, 3.45 ERA, 8.57 K/9, 2.66 BB/9, 0.49 HR/9

The ERA was the only thing that was incredibly affected by today. The peripherals didn't change much (K rate went a little up, BB rate went a little up, K/BB rate is a little worse now, but HR rate continued to to go down). This was not a disaster outing for peripherals because he didn't give up a HR and he struck out 5 batters in 3 innings.

Clearly Castro should return the favor and call out Quade's nightly mistake(s). I suspect we'd hear a lot more from Castro then we would from Quade.

Aside from just a never ending string of horrible managing, we've got the Dempster thing, the umpire rant, and now a "one missplay ruined the whole game and therefore the season" explosion. Three strikes and you're out? I think he knows he's in over his head and is desperate.
