In June, Harper blew a kiss toward Greensboro (N.C.) pitcher Zach Neal at the end of his home run trot.

I don't remember the earlier posts in this thread, but just in case this hasn't been covered yet, I would just like to say:

Awesome. This guy needs to be in the majors yesterday. Any chance he'll get traded to the Cardinals?

Oh my God I hope so.

Let's not just give them another elite hitter, which for all his dbaggedness, he still could be.

Like the quality of their ballplayers has ever made a difference. They'll compete regardless. Not only would they be infinitely more fun to hate if they had Harper, but it would be a no-win for the BFIB, who would be forced to either love the biggest DB in the league or turn on the hometown star.

The wholesomeness of the BFIB would permeate him and cause him to undergo a miraculous transformation into a model MLB citizen and paragon of sportsmanship.

uhh, i would rather everyone hate him on the cubs or like, the royals or something.

Fair enough, but it doesn't matter where he plays his first few years in the bigs. He'll end up in a northeastern big market once his payday rolls around. Then the douchiness will just be the manifestation of his intense desire to win.

like washington dc?

You can swim across a river into Virginia from DC ergo it's not in the Northeast. It's south of the Mason-Dixon.

and I've never heard anyone consider DC a "big market".

in baseball they don't act like a big market - partly because they're new to the area and partly because the team sucks so people don't go - but they absolutely have the population base to spend like a big market team.

as for it being northeastern, i consider it to be northeastern but maybe that's just because so many northerners live down there. it's much less southern than, say, richmond.

anyway, if the bet is who harper ends up playing for after his initial round of contracts, and the options are (yankees, mets, red sox, phillies) or (everyone else), i'll take the field.

DC is a huge market. Easily top 10 in MLB. The DC MSA is #7 in the US. Now that's mitigated a bit by the fact that the Nats share it with the Orioles.

And if we were to sit down and realign baseball geographically, DC would end up in the "Northeast" division with BOS NYY NYM and Philly.

He's probably right. He didn't say Harper is being persecuted or viciously slurred or attacked. He used the term scrutiny. What other newcomer besides Robinson has had this much scrutiny?

Ichiro.

Sometimes referred to as the Mid-Atlantic region.

His cockiness would surely cause a disruption in the clubhouse. I don't want winners; I want choir boys.

Bryce Harper (hamstring) might be shut down for the rest of the season.

Harper strained his right hamstring Thursday while running the bases in a game at Double-A Harrisburg. It's not a major injury, but the minor league schedule is done in two weeks and the Nats aren't going to push him back. If the 18-year-old outfielder doesn't show progress within the next few days, the decision will be made to end his first professional season.

Douchiest injury ever.

If he was lazy like Aramis, that wouldn't have happened.

There was some national buffoon on the radio last night freaking the f out about harper. "HE'S A JACKASS, GUESS WHAT, YOU'RE NO CRAIG COUNSELL, BUDDY, HE'S A GLUE GUY, HE WENT 0-45 AND DOUG MELVIN DIDNT EVEN THINK ABOUT RELEASING HIM. NOT EVEN ONCE. EVERY TEAM NEEDS A GLUE GUY, NOT EVERY TEAM NEEDS A BRYCE HARPER. THERE ARE MAJOR LEAGUE PITCHERS THAT HAVE SAID THEY WANT TO DRILL HIM IN THE BACK WITH A FASTBALL BECAUSE HE'S JUST AN 18-YEAR OLD JERK. IVE HEARD THEM SAY IT."

They need to be careful before they make me like him in spite of myself

If the majority of professional blowhards are rallying against Harper because he's consciously playing a villain, then I'm on his side. There's nothing more ridiculous than a bunch of sanctimonious wankers crying about morality and Playing the Game the Right Way™

Honestly, I hope he ratchets up the douche factor, gets 10 World Series rings (with the Cubs), and shoves it in the faces of all those people.

These people probably all love Brian Wilson's shenanigans

i wish i was so in-the-know on doug melvin's thought processes as a general manager.

also, why in the back? that seems silly. i'd think they'd just want to hit him somewhere on his body, rather than specifically targeting the back. i should write this major sports radio talk show host and ask if there is a more specific back target, such as left shoulderblade, or lower spinal region. can i get a link to an email?

I really do not care that much about Bryce Harper's douchiness. I was watching some LLWS action this week and some team had many of its players playing with Bryce Harper eye black design. I immediately disliked them for playing without a douchiness streak. If you are going to copy please go all the way youngsters.
