He's not being racist so much as just being clueless and dumb. No, the scrutiny over Harper ISN'T even remotely close to what Robinson faced. It was just a stupid, stupid thing to say.
Posted
He's probably right. He didn't say Harper is being persecuted or viciously slurred or attacked. He used the term scrutiny. What other newcomer besides Robinson has had this much scrutiny?
Posted
That's stupid. The scrutiny that Bryce Harper, highly touted offensive prospect, is not even in the same universe as Jackie Robinson, THE (ACKNOWLEDGED) FIRST BLACK PLAYER IN MLB HISTORY. If you want to say that Harper is getting more scrutiny than the usual top prospect, sure I'm on board with that. But that's still nothing like what Robinson went through. It's a horrible, horrible, moronic comparison.

He didn't say that Harper had as much/more scrutiny as Robinson. He's saying that Robinson was the last person who had as much/more scrutiny as Harper. There's a difference.

But the difference is astronomical. It's like saying that Uranus is the biggest planet since Saturn. That's great, but Saturn is [expletive]-all huge compared to Uranus. It's a loaded, needless comparison that comes across sounding dumb. How about, "I've never seen a prospect get this kind of scrutiny?"

Perhaps he should have used 1000 disclaimers to say that he isn't directly comparing the two, but how is what he said incorrect? Harper's scrutiny is light years below that of Jackie, but it's probably true that he is the second most scrutinized newcomer.

It's incorrect because it's obviously incorrect. There's no metric to gauge the specific level of scrutiny prospects get, but there's basically this:

Jackie Robinson

Everyone else

I mean, Bryce Harper is hardly the first highly touted prospect to come along. And what scrutiny are people even talking about? Calling him a douchebag because of his stupid truck? Making fun of his shitty tattoos that he showed off to everyone? Everything else is what prospects with these type of expectations get.

I'm surprised to hear that people in the nats organization think he's more scrutinized than strasburg, i really dont buy that at all. Maybe it's just because he's younger or something, but Strasburg's minor league starts made it to sportscenter. Harper hasnt had anything like that.

It's probably a combination of scrutiny and the fact that he gets negative attention for being a douche, while strasburg seems like a pretty good guy.

You are right on that last point. Other than being an awesome pitcher, Strasburg is uninteresting. Harper most certainly isn't.

yeah, and if harper is scrutinized, part of it he brings upon himself by acting like a complete tool

the first 25 black players were probably all more scrutinized. and the first caribbean players. and japanese players. and like 300 other guys who screwed up in the playoffs or other important games or signed big contracts. and guys who said things to the press that were stupid and got attention. and other huge prospects whose exploits are actually talked about on a daily basis (strasburg/prior/whoever else).

this guy is a dingus, i hope his face explodes

What the hell is interesting about him?

Personally, I'm interested in discovering the limits of his douchiness

In June, Harper blew a kiss toward Greensboro (N.C.) pitcher Zach Neal at the end of his home run trot.

I don't remember the earlier posts in this thread, but just in case this hasn't been covered yet, I would just like to say:

Awesome. This guy needs to be in the majors yesterday. Any chance he'll get traded to the Cardinals?

Let's not just give them another elite hitter, which for all his dbaggedness, he still could be.
