Cole Hamels:

I was trying to hit him. I’m not going to deny it. It’s something I grew up watching. That’s what happened. I’m just trying to continue the old baseball. Some people get away from it. I remember when I was a rookie, the strike zone was really, really small and you didn’t say anything. That’s the way baseball is. Sometimes the league is protecting certain players. It’s that old-school prestigious way of baseball.

Jayson Werth broke his wrist today and is out a minimum of 6 weeks. He was probably never in danger of getting sent back down, but this all but guarantees that Harper will remain on the club through the year I'm sure (assuming he continues to play well).

After his year last year and now this injury that's turning out to be an aboslutely terrible contract. Possibly the worst in baseball as of right now.

“Players take care of themselves,” Rizzo said after I called him this morning. “I’ve never seen a more classless, gutless chicken [bleep] act in my 30 years in baseball … It was a gutless chicken [bleep] [bleeping] act. That was a fake-tough act. No one has ever accused Cole Hamels of being old school.”

“Cole Hamels says he’s old school? He’s the polar opposite of old school. He’s fake tough. He thinks he’s going to intimidate us after hitting our 19-year rookie who’s eight games into the big leagues? He doesn’t know who he’s dealing with.”

Which sucks because Werth is a damn good player and most people will know him as "worst contract guy."

Btw even then no one beats Soriano...

Wow that's funny, but does Rizzo really expect different? Veterans are not going to defer to Harper, and he'll be wearing a target on his back for pitchers all year.

Sorry, but to me this is the kind of [expletive] a hardcore fan loves. It's so old school to do that...and there's plenty of those guys left in baseball.

I don't think a single person think Harper can't take it...I really buy that talent (going out there i know). [expletive] he's good.

Hrm, I know! I'll hit him in the back! Not only does that put a runner on base, but it will surely demoralize the batter to where he's nothing but a quivering, simpering mess the next time he's at the plate! And I won't get punished by the league or anything or face retaliation! This is the best plan I've ever had!

1) Tf are the Nats going to do? Send out Mike Morse to knock him in?

2) Zimmerman hit Hamels later on. Pitchers hit in the NL. IIRC Hamels made one out at the plate last night.

The pussification of sport...They didn't just come up with this last night for Harper. Bonus babies have always gotten similar treatment....Call it tradition...Or just point out the logical fallacies as if no one gets that that's a free base runner.

Simply put the only thing that can be said is that the 19 year old future superstar turned it around and scored a run. His team didn't touch Hamels the rest of the night. Such is the sport....I hope it never, ever goes away...Jah forbid the numbers don't dominate every single aspect of sport...as if the pitcher should crap his pants over a base runner being intentionally put on. No damn respeck for history and tradition.

Yes, I know that. You missed my sarcasm. Because Harper was put on base, he scored a run as a result (and stole home, no less-- a very adequate "[expletive] you" to Hamels) which could have been a factor in the game. It wasn't, but it could have been. Also, he was retaliated against as a direct result (if the pitcher's aim is off and Hamels gets hit in the elbow or hand he goes on the DL because he's so "old school" and badass), and to top it off because he intentionally threw at Harper and admitted it, he may face a suspension from the league. That may have flown back in the day, but in today's game there is usually punishment from the league for throwing at hitters, so he may miss his next start as well.

Sure was worth it!

The Cubs at least got a couple of seasons where Soriano was worth more than his contract. The Nationals are probably going to end up with one with Werth, and even that was only by about a million.

hopefully hamels is doing douchey things like this on the cubs next year

I wouldn't be opposed to Hamels being on the Cubs, but he doesn't have to go around intentionally throwing at opposing hitters.

Zimmerman hit Hamels in the leg...for a reason...No chance in hell he goes higher, amd theres a reason why Harper got hit in the back by the ass...There is ZERO intent to injure...Come on some of you guys have to know baseball well enough to know that this is borderline tradition.

The fact that Harper did what he did speaks of his talent and I'm sure someone like Hanels would merely have to tip his cap (mentally since a physical gesture just isn't happening). The 19 year old rookie didnt back down but rather delivered a [expletive] you...as a baseball fan I full appreciate every dynamic there. It's animal alpha/beta bs, but humans are animals and that kind of crap happens. It's great.

I never said it wasn't tradition. You're right-- it's been happening since the game began. But just because it's "tradition" doesn't mean it isn't stupid and pointless.

Am I missing something that Harper said or did this year that would piss off current players? Or is this Hamels just getting offended that people are hyping up Harper's ability and cockiness and hitting him for doing nothing?

Having read Hamels' "explanation" for why he hit Harper, I still don't get it. It was his first AB against Hamels. It isn't as though he disrespected him or broke one of the "unwritten rules". Hamels is apparently just pissed off that a 19 year old kid with a bad haircut is playing professional baseball? He comes off like a curmudgeonly old weirdo. Am I missing something?

Harper exists...and there's no way Hamels just found out who he was last week. The guy was on the cover of SI at 15 and his videos are all over the Internet (including blowing kisses to opposing pitchers.) Ballplayers know who the bonus babies are...even if we fans like to lord our intelligence over then via the Internet.

It has nothing to do with being offended...Everything to do with make testosteroned up bs. This shouldn't even be an issue/story, but 21st century sport makes anything and everything a story.

So how many different starters get to throw at a hyped rookie?

Whoever wants to...How does this not scream pack alpha bs to anyone? That's ALL it is and for the most part it's not even malicious...It's a HUGE compliment towards Harper....baseball welcomes a new top dog.

Why is this more than it is? Where have you people been the past 100+ years?

.

These guys get paid millions to hit, throw, and catch a ball. The whole operation is stupid and pointless but it exists.

Cole Hamels is the George Mallory of intentionally throwing at talented young baseball players.

Lol pretty much. This mountain won't kill him, fortunately.

I actually expect Harper to own Hamels btw...He put some good swings on him last night...I expect him to own a lot of pitchers.

you can imagine he'll charge the mound and pummel some poor unfortunate soul if this becomes a theme*

*i'm rooting for this

The quote from Hamels after the game is [expletive] stupid. I can't figure out why he did it, instead of just smiling and saying "it got away"
