How do you determine how many games constitutes missing starts? You're also punishing pitchers disproportionately by having them lose out on more money than position players.

Instead of suspending Hamels 5 games, suspend him 1 start. TA-DA!

Philadelphia then announces that Hamels was supposed to start today on 0 days rest. Or any of the next 4 days. And he misses zero actual starts.

I think it would be pretty easy to do something like a 6-8 game suspension for starting pitchers while only taking away 1 or 2 games checks. If you do 6 games it's at the very least pushing back his start a couple games. 8 games has a good chance of missing a full turn.

And MLB has now suspended Hamels 5 games, meaning he'll miss his next start. OLD TIME!!!

Just announced a few minutes ago. Link forthcoming.

Ugh and the phony morality wins out yet again. Are sponsors pulling out as well?

It's a minor punishment but it still embellishes soxiety's general bratty attitude. Nothing fails to just not offend.

Are you serious? If I'd intentionally throw a rock-hard baseball at someone on the street, even though I only meant to aim for their thigh, and even if I did no real damage, I'd be arrested. It's ok with you just because it happened on a baseball field?

Yeah that's like totally the same [expletive] thing. I now get why Hamels is a meany poo head who just commited a so grosy act upon an innocent unknown teenage boy.

Those boys play so rough! Why can't they be nice? Why don't people just play nice? I'm outraged, hear me roar! MeeeeoooooW!

Ok, so then enlighten me. How is what happened with Hamels and Harper any different from the scenario I described, other than it took place on a baseball field during a game? There is absolutely NO difference whatsoever other than that. Not even a little bit.

I'm 100% sure it occurring on a baseball field is ALL that's needed. That's a HUGE difference. Throw a rock at some strangers head and tell the cop that Cole Hamels got away with it...what kind of ridiculous point do you even think you're making? That it was wrong and not nice? Whoa try not to fall off that limb! Wtf?

Why don't you waste phony moral outrage on something that actually matters? Maybe where someone was actually hurt?

So: Intentionally throwing a rock-hard object at a high rate of speed at someone on the street = not ok, but doing it on a baseball field = hunky dory. Got it.

And no, just because Cole Hamels got away with it during a game doesn't mean its ok to do in society. What if he had hit Harper in the head? Or hit him on the wrist/hand and put him on the DL regardless of whether he actually meant to hit him there? Would it have been ok then?

1) A professional pitcher is capable of throwing a pitcher where he wants to. He DIDN'T throw at Harper's head just like Zimmerman threw at his leg....Guess why? Also how stupid is that "what if" in the first place. You equate yourself or some random pegging someone with a rock that might go astray with a person who throws a ball with precision for a living. Not to mention that while a baseball has mass most rocks will weight more and generally...[expletive] this is so stupid.

For the love of the planet earth take that kind of boring nonsense outrage over nothing and use it on one of the many genocides going on right now....Or maybe try to polish up some of the ideas they couldnt present with Occupy.

1) Even professional pitchers miss their targets. If they didn't, would there ever be anyone who got sent down to AAA because of control issues?

2) You didn't have a 2 so neither do I.

Sammy Sosa got beaned in the head on Easter Sunday 2004 in Pittsburgh and was never really the same after that, and that was unintentional-- the ball just got away from Solomon Torres. Torres was not (and should not have been) punished as it was accidental. Accidental is one thing. The very vast majority of HBP's in baseball are unintentional. But, intent or not, guys have gone on the DL because of errant pitches that hit them in the face/head/wrist/hand/ankle/knee/etc. Hamels is a pro pitcher, but are you telling me he has control to the point where he never misses his intended target ever? Accidental HBP's are one thing and happen from time to time. However, when there is intent (i.e, the pitcher ADMITS to doing it) there needs to be some sort of punishment.

Hey guess what...Hamels doesn't and didn't have that problem. He hit him precisely where he should have and wanted to, just like Zimmerman would and did later.

So your examples are an unintentional beaning and pegging a stranger with a rock....Christ let it go you're not even making a point.

The "why do you care about this when there are so many worse things going on?" argument is the new Godwin's Law.

BBB's Law.

Yeah but it would REALLY help if there was a real argument in there. It's such useless, pointless outrage over a nothing event and the best being out out is throwing a rock at a stranger, a "what if," and an unintentional beaning gone awry.

Didn't have that problem ON THAT PITCH, yes. But your prior post insinuated that Hamels, being a professional pitcher, could hit his target every single time ever. And my counter to that was no, that's ridiculous bullcrap.

One thing that should tell you the validity of my argument: You probably don't know this because you haven't been here that long, but If I so much as even make a typo half the board usually jumps on it. If I was so far out there, this thread would be about 10 consecutive pages of people calling me an idiot. There are plenty of threads like that from the past. Nobody's doing that except for you, and that should tell you something.

Also for the record, Zimmerman should be suspended as well for retaliation. Two wrongs not making a right and all that.

Phony morality? What is wrong with you?

Again I ask, where was A-Rod's "welcome to the big leagues, hot shot" beanball? Ryan Braun's? Junior's?

There's something wrong with calling it that?

Your whole stance on this is ridiculously perplexing.

I'm sure guys gave Arod, Braun, and Junior chin music when they come up.. I just don't know if it was announced to the world like Hamels did.

Don Sutton on the Braves telecast tonight was talking about the incident and said he had never heard of hitting a rookie/phenom/hyped prospect simply because they were a rookie/phenom/hyped prospect before. He basically called Hamels out for just being an ass.

You remember their early career stuff? Those guys NEVER saw a brush back or HBP early on? Pitchers didn't do the same thing? Cole Hamels brought this plague upon the sport and poor Bryce? These things didn't become headline news 20 years ago. No one got suspended for it. No one considered it THE story of the night.

Not just that but 20 years ago the Internet wasn't full of clips of them blowing kisses to opponents and generally being a douche. It wasn't around to push the hype...I mean really?

Sorry, I'm going to leave the burden of proof on "top prospects get thrown at just for being top prospects", and not the inverse.

No no no this would have been huge. Those poor boys could have gotten hurt....

Btw good on the chin music...20 years ago and that pitch is by the head, up and in. This is a bad, bad joke.

Man, I miss the old days where young hotshot punks were intentionally hit with baseballs and certain folk weren't allowed to play the game because of their ethnicity. *sigh* Those were the golden days, surely.

I have Lefty's Legacy somewhere....Bonus babies constantly caught [expletive] and it's mentioned in the book. Even if I didnt remember that tidbit I would neeeeeveeeer care to prove such a minute event...This is SUCH a non event to me beyond people making it way more than it is.

But no do go on...this is a MAJOR issue that the sport needs to really investigate.

Where's the concern for Hamels, who was blatantly beaned an inning later? He didnt back down over that, and that was most definitely not an accident. What if he got hurt? What it he woke up and his leg was black and blue?

Yep, same thing.

Black pitcher Bob Gibson would NEVER thing of knocking down a hitter! Think of what might happen!

Note a few posts up where I said the opposing pitcher should also be suspended for plunking Hamels.

I know Gibson was a badass, but I never saw him pitch. If he was a headhunter, then he was an idiot, too.

Ugh while that's fair, it's still a little lame at best.

When did this whole "let's get outraged over nothing" thing start?

They solved it themselves on the field, which despite its meatheadedness and lack of official law/saction led to NO injuries. Why do you people care so much over this?
