This isn't all that unrealistic for us to be involved this late. If we actually had offered a 5 year deal around 30 mill per, with maybe a 6th year option with a huge 15 to 20 mill buyout, adding an extra guaranteed year with the same buyout plan SHOULD have Pujols looking very hard at us right now. Because it'd basically be a 6 year 180 mill. With a 15 to 20 mill buyout. That would be tough for him to turn down if he's looking at 10 year offers for 220 mill or so.

Come on Cubs, do what the Phillies did with Cliff Lee.

Offer him the most money while being an already loaded team coming off of a World Series win and NLCS appearance?

I could never do that job. I'd try to talk my friends into doing really stupid stuff just so I'd have something hilarious to write about.

Phil Rogers has some fun writing about the Red Sox signing Pujols and trading Adrian Gonzalez to the Cubs.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/chi-your-morning-phil-agonz-cj-two-dankses-20111208,0,2637175.story

The Red Sox would not want it known that they are in on Pujols, as they already have a big-ticket first baseman. They acquired Gonzalez at the winter meetings a year ago and have since signed him to the a seven-year, $154-million contract. But what if they have decided to upgrade at first, which would allow them to use Gonzalez as a trade chip?

While Epstein and Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer have age and conditioning issues with Pujols and Fielder, they love the 29-year-old Gonzalez. He’s a complete player – defensive metrics ranked him second overall among first-base regulars last season, with a +6 ranking in runs saved – to build around, and Epstein would pay heavily to get him.

Boston needs pitching in a major way. So how about this: The Red Sox shock the world by signing Pujols, then send the Red Sox Matt Garza and Carlos Marmol for Gonzalez and some prospects, possibly including highly regarded third baseman Will Middlebrooks, between-the-cracks right-hander Michael Bowden and some other young pitchers?

It’s the grand slam of lobby theories

Well I guess the Cubs aren't the "mystery 3rd team in on Pujols".

from MLBTR:

We heard late last night that there is "no shot" Albert Pujols will make a decision before the Winter Meetings end. Still, here's the latest on the man who has $200MM+ offers from three teams including the Cardinals, Angels, and a mystery team who would reportedly need to trade an established first baseman to clear a path for the three-time MVP:

I want to see that actual report to be sure they're not just reporting the speculation that that's the case as though it's news. Rogers isn't the only one to "report" (make up) something like that.

i.e. here is what Olney tweeted

Folks in lobby wondering if any team w/established 1Bman is trying to set up for Pujols deal. Answer on the Yankees, not surprisingly: No. 39 minutes ago via web Retweeted by 22 people

Gotta love the idea where the Cubs not only get a lesser 1B than Pujols, but get the least amount of young talent possible from trading their 2 most tradeable assets...all while not getting any additional payroll flexibility.

It comes from a Jayson Stark story:

http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/7329693/sources-los-angeles-angels-third-unidentified-team-enter-albert-pujols-talks-no-decision-imminent

The identity of the reported third team remained unknown. But people within the sport suggested it was likely to be a club that has an established, big-name first baseman it would need to trade before it could complete a deal with Pujols.

Meh. Still sounds like speculation more than sourced rumor.

Would the Yankees really need to trade Teixeira to sign Pujols? DH is not locked up there. However, I would think that Teixeira should be able to nab a really good starting pitcher.

There is a difference between them speculating and throwing [expletive] against the wall, like what Rogers did above, and actually reporting that something is happening.

Words like "would likely be" "should" "might" are good indicators.

oops...misread. After thinking about it, I wondered why the Yankees would be a mystery team. I would think that Pujol's agent would make sure there was not mystery if it was the Yankees.

Starks's report sounds like a bunch of dudes sitting at the bar wondering who the hell the mystery team is and everyone agreeing, "Well it's gotta be some team that we haven't heard of with an established 1B!"

In general, there's been all sorts of nonsense about how it doesn't make sense for the Cubs to get a stud 1B, or how the Cubs can't afford a stud 1B, or the Cubs have no business even thinking about a stud 1B. When somebody bases their speculation about how the Cubs aren't in on a stud 1B with these theories, that is dumb.

Exactly. People wondering what would keep a mystery team quiet.

To be honest, I wish sports writers never did speculate, because usually it's really, really, REALLY dumb speculation. Like, the height of stupidity. Like what Rogers did.
