Kurjian just said that Albert has been upset with the Cards for about 2-3 years. Lots of rumblings about Albert not feeling the love from the organization and them not taking care of this sooner. The Cardinals let it go too far and now it is too late.

He was upset because the Cards didn't want to give him 10yrs 250-275m.

You mean his now established market worth?

If the Cards would have offered Puhols an 8/180 deal when Mark Tiexeira signed his contract with the Yankees, I bet he would have taken it. They decided to let him keep playing at a discount. They made their business decision. Puhols just made his.

I'm not angry at Pujols for taking the money. On the other hand, I think the Cards made a competitive offer, but he got a better one with the Angels. At his age and that contract length it makes more sense for him to be in the AL. Personally, I'm glad the cards didn't match their offer.

And yes, this sucks.

Yeah it's undeniable that the Cards made their bed here. The media has been talking the last three years about "whether now is the time to try to lock up Pujols," and the team didn't do it. I guess we don't know for sure, but there were no reported offers until the one last spring.

There were talks last year, but reports say wouldn't he wouldn't budge from 10/250-275m. The Cards were never going to give him that kind of money. It is what it is.

Rogers just said that Pujols was never in the top 15 in salary, which is stunning. He was the biggest bargain in baseball and the Cards milked that cow until that cow said adios. Edited by Hollandsworth's mug

how i handicapped it, back in February (page 18):

this is how i see it now, in order of likelihood:

Cards - Cubs - Yankees - Rangers - Angels - Red Sox - Marlins

so i overstated Boston and NYY's chances, but i hit big on possibility of LAA and MIA

edit: hey, another prescient prophecy (April '10):

Marlins are going to spend big on a guy to open their new stadium with (we call this Juan Gonzalezing), but i'm not sure who i think that'll be yet

except it was like four guys, i guess

Exactly. They were spoiled by him and essentially took him for granted, and now it has come back to bite them in the ass.

Cardinals fans may delude themselves with romantic notions that Albert would always stay because of "honor" and "legacy" or because of some misguided notion that St. Louis is such a bastion of baseball that he couldn't pry himself away. But those in charge either decided keeping him long term would prove too costly and decided to make the pretense of trying to keep him or they're morons who bought into the same crap the fans did.

Again, Cards fans have zero reason to be mad at Albert. They're acting like kids who were spoiled for too long and are having a tantrum when it stops.

And now Fielder and Boras are doing a happy dance. I have to think Boras will command at least 175-200M for Prince if Albert got a quarter of a billion.

they can command all they want, nobody is giving him that.

No one thought 250 or 260 would be given to Albert and it happened.

I thought he might even get more.

I think it's safe to assume they played it the way they did to purposefully let him sign elsewhere while saving face, and did so from the beginning.

I'll probably hate my Directv once the intro rate is gone too, man.

10/250 was widely speculated. 10/200 was where rumors heated up this winter, but suggesting that nobody thought Pujols would come close to the biggest contract in MLB just doens't hold up.

I'm not going to trudge the instances up, but I called the Angels as a likely spot numerous times over the past year. Arte Moreno & Co. had been left in the cold on free agents on a number of occasions and figured they'd get tired of it and strike hard at some point.

which is not necessarily a dumb thing to do.

Before the 2011 season I thought he had a legit shot at 10/300, but after I thought 10/250 was probably the ceiling. I'm surprised but not shocked he got what he did.

I am glad it wasn't us.

They've been left in the cold, but have also gotten their man in the past.

Lots of people taking shots at the Cards. Harold Reynolds on MLB network: "In Alberts mind, why did they not come to me sooner? The man was underpaid and he is an honarable guy who played out his contract".

Back to Prince. He is arguably the second best dominant force at his position. To suggest that he could not get 150-175M is a bit naive. Will he? Not sure but it would shock me at all.

True, but not so much recently. Aramis, Konerko, Crawford, etc. Plus they've been hurting offensively. I had my doubts when they didn't get into the AP bidding early, but that he ended up there is hardly a shock.

Add Wilson to the rotation and Pujols to the lineup and that team is going to be awfully good next year.

Didn't figure on the Angels in this race, but I was pretty convinced Pujols wasn't giving St. Louis another discount. The guy is finally getting the money he's been deserving for years. Happy to see it will be in the American League.

Look Fielder's an elite bat at a power position. If you don't think he can get 100M you're insane.

He's so good he's sponge worthy.
