The Marlins, the other team in the bidding for Pujols, made a final offer for Albert that would have actually exceeded the Angels offer -- because of no state income tax in Florida -- and approached $290 million in total value, another source said.

Anaheim is a much better situation, all things considered.

Pujols turns his back on St Louis

Exactly the kind of stuff the Cardinals were hoping would be the headlines.

Color me skeptical that any of the writers or many of the sources involved with these rumors know how to accurately project the tax implications of offered deals.

yeah, i was just going to say the same thing. running those numbers is hard, and the people involved here are not smart. they almost certainly just looked at the tax rates in each state and assumed yearly salary times state tax rate equals money lost by not going to florida or texas.

A better one would have been "Lack of respect comes home to roost".

Well funnier, at least.

Bernie uses a "source" for his mention about the tax implications....doesn't sound like he broke out the adding machine or anything.

This bums me out because I was hoping the Cardinals would have overpayed and been tied up with Pujols' overvalued contract for the next decade.

Everyone here in the office are fine with him going to Anaheim at $25mil/year. They're mostly ticked because Pujols claimed "it wasn't about the money".

It's called denial.

Let me know how they feel a few weeks into next year.

yup. they're still in that honeymoon phase of winning the world series is dramatic fashion.

once a few games are played next season and they realize what they just lost, they'll feel it.

No LaRussa and no Pujols is going to sting like a b*tch next year for Cardinal fans. Then again a brand new World Series flag eases the pain.

If it exceeded the Angerls offer because of the lack of state income tax, it doesn't make sense that it was also $30m more in total value. Florida can theoretically offer a little less than everybody else. If they offered $290m, the state income tax differential is small in comparison to the actual difference in value.

Hendry's famous quote after the Soriano deal....."We're going to get good and we're going to stay good"......

You missed the rest of the quote. "...with shortsighted moves and no long term vision!"

The coping mechanism going through the BFIB's minds now is that they didn't need Pujols to win the WS because "he went 6-25 in the series, all 6 hits in game 3, 6 RBI, 4 in game 3, scored 8 runs, 4 in game 3....he had one good game in the series and nothing the rest of the games, it was a team effort."

Forgetting the fact that they do not even sniff the playoffs without him. Man, I am LOVING this!

lol...they've learned that winning doesn't actually do much for attendance in Florida.

i really wondered if that might not be the case. if the market for fielder wanted to somehow crater, that'd probably be okay.

Fielder has told friends that the Cubs are on his wish list. Would there be any chance of Fielder agreeing to a shorter deal?

“I’ve had people come out (and say) ‘Oh, you ought to do a three-year deal,’” said Scott Boras, Fielder’s agent. “Well, that doesn’t fit anybody’s purposes in doing these things. The length of a contract has a lot to do with an understanding from both side about what franchise players are and what they mean, the branding part, the whole media rights part. ... All those things go into it.

“That initial concept is ‘the shorter the better.’ But the reality of it is, in these types of player, it’s usually not the best dynamic for the franchise. … The great thing about young free agents is the probability of performance at optimal levels is so high for the majority of the year of the contract.”

As far as I can tell, we're looking at quotes from Boras there??

Well the couple of delusional Cards fans that were relying on the fact that this was only "sources" reporting the Pujols deal can now begin the healing process....

jonmorosi: #Angels formally announce they have agreed in principle to a contract with Albert Pujols. Yes, people, this is really happening

The Angels signings of Pujols and Wilson makes me wonder

A. So how much are these guys paying Pujols, Wilson, and Wells?

B. does this pressure the Rangers into the Fielder race

C. Could this pressure the Rangers to overpay Garza? Last I checked they were discussing a deal but the asking price was too steep.

D. Kendry Morales and/or Ervin Santana?
