MLB network reporting Marlins have serious/strong interest in Fielder. :banghead:

But his friend said he wants to play for the Cubs.

Who was a friend of a friend of a distant relative. Just amazing that the [expletive] Marlins are going this hard after everyone and we can't do [expletive]!

what would have liked cubs management to do? give pujols a ridiculous 250 million dollar contract? call cj wilson and convince him that guns and his hometown aren't actually attractive to him and that he would prefer chicago?

all 3 of the contracts the marlins have given out have been bad.

You just said Pujols was the best player in the game and that his contract was not a surprise. And I would not want the Cubs spending that. And how are they bad contracts? They're trying to win and win for a long time.

I would think this makes Kendry Morales a non tender candidate. If so, he just moved up quite a bit on my list of potential 1B. I'm afraid Fielder is going to get 200 mill now personally. and as long as it's not from the Brewers or Cards, we don't have to sign him to even win the division. it'd be nice and it IS what I want, but if the reports are true we want to go shorter term with him, we may get beat out by the Fish or Mariners.

You don't think someone would work a trade for Morales before it got to the nontender stage?

Maybe. But his health would have to be totally proven to be OK. Even then, you run the risk of teams knowing you're going to get rid of him and they're going to be taking shots at the Angels because of that. If the Angels don't know for a fact he's tradeable without having to pay any cash whatsoever, then I think there's a shot he gets nontendered, especially because of his iffy health. Plus, don't the contracts have to be tendered by tomorrow?

This bums me out because I was hoping the Cardinals would have overpayed and been tied up with Pujols' overvalued contract for the next decade.

Everyone here in the office are fine with him going to Anaheim at $25mil/year. They're mostly ticked because Pujols claimed "it wasn't about the money".

You have no idea what Theo and Jed are doing and seem to forget the Marlins are out to drum up positive PR, so are likely leaking things left and right and putting their name into everything.

Yeah, Florida is spending money, but not top end money. As long as they keep their name in the papers everyday, and/or for as long as possible, they are getting the PR they were looking for heading into the new stadium.

You're acting like an hysterical woman.

Calm the [expletive] down.

This actually made me laugh. It really did. I'm just pissed! :D

It's called denial.

Let me know how they feel a few weeks into next year.

No they aren't. They're trying to sell tickets and make a short term splash. Why do you think they don't give out NTCs? Have you not been paying attention for the past 14 years?

And the contracts are bad. Old/injury prone guys they paid more than anyone else would have.

Yeah, it was about the years of refusing to offer him more.

Marlins and short term splash? Pun intended?

To me, this kind of mirrors us losing Maddux the first time. It was how he was treated, not necessarily about the money. In Pujols' case, he was underpaid for his entire career there and didn't feel appreciated, since he was the best player in the game for the vast majority of his deal. I don't see how anyone can possibly blame him for leaving. The Cards had a few years to get this done without anyone else involved and preyed on the loyalty factor to make it work. And still expected him to take less, because it's where he began his career. Oh well, you flirted with disaster St.Louis. And it decided to marry the hell out of you evidently.

They're really sharks when it comes to negotiating.

Yeah, those contracts are terrible. Especially the hilarious backload on Reyes' deal.

Wow. What a horrible deal. What about that Trumbo kid that the Angels have playing 1B? Can he play another position?

DKnobler: Angels are telling teams: We're not trading anyone. They say Trumbo can DH, play 3B

Didn't see this posted:

The Marlins, the other team in the bidding for Pujols, made a final offer for Albert that would have actually exceeded the Angels offer -- because of no state income tax in Florida -- and approached $290 million in total value, another source said.

yup. they're still in that honeymoon phase of winning the world series is dramatic fashion.

once a few games are played next season and they realize what they just lost, they'll feel it.

Color me skeptical that any of the writers or many of the sources involved with these rumors know how to accurately project the tax implications of offered deals.
