They had an interview with Epstein on WGN Chicago and I have to say, he sounded (and looked like he was) full of crap when asked if the Cubs were on the verge of anything big. "No, small deals we are making progress on but nothing big".

Big puppy dog eyes, sounded down and looked away from the camera many times. I have a feeling we are going to do something big.

The Cubs seem like the dark horse in all this that's being written in the past couple days that they're just " lurking in the backround", especially with Pujols sweepstakes. If they could pull off something by surprise and come away with 1 of the 2, I would friggin run naked down Michigan Ave.

Or Gammons was stalking him.

At least with Hendry, we'd probably know the exact offer we've presented. And he'd be doing this one thing and one thing only, until there was resolution. He'd probably even have said as much in his interviews, which there would be plenty of. Stealth Mode is cool, but damn..........Throw us a bone, Theo. Please. No? OK, you're the man anyway and I've never been so confident in the direction this team is taking, even with just one move done.

Agent Scott Boras says he has a number of contract offers to take back to Fielder, including many from teams that surprised him, tweets Haudricourt.

Sure...

I'd be surprised if I got contract offers from teams that didn't exist, too.

That said, I literally trust almost no reporter right now.

imb! will be really hurt by this

He's just lashing out because his favorite one left the business to go kill people on an oil rig.

ETA: Read Butters's response, but I don't care, I stand by my post.

I was just thinking...if the Cubs don't sign Pujols or Fielder, how are they going to get the payroll up to the amount that was expected. Or will they even end up getting there? Could you see the Cubs operating with a $90 million payroll for a season or two before jumping back up when we are rebuilt?

am i the only one who wants prince over pujols? a ryan howard type contract for fielder would be excellent. 10 years and over 200 million for pujols scares the [expletive] out of me.

No, you're not. Pujols is better for sure, but at 9-10 years? No thank you.

I wouldn't want Prince for that long either, but at 5-6 years I'd be all right with it.

I thought about that too. My guess is they'd go ahead give Kuroda 12 or 13 mill and maybe even take a flyer on Beltran for 2/28 or so. Might not even be a bad idea, his market has not developed at all. Another way, one that probably fits Theo's vision more would be to sign Cespedes and Darvish. This would probably account for the entire payroll differential, especially with the posting fee accounted for in some way. The first option would allow them to go on a spending spree with Soler and some of the other unsigned IFA before the spending controls hit next July. My guess is it's one or the other of these two plans though.

According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, the Angels have made a 10-year offer to free agent first baseman Albert Pujols worth more than $210 million.

Nightengale says that there's also a third "mystery team" still hanging around the negotiations. The Angels are courting free agent left-hander C.J. Wilson heavily and might not have the funds for both an elite pitcher and an elite batter, but it's quite clear that their bid is being taken seriously by Pujols' camp. It's looking like a resolution isn't close.
