Rays execs have scoffed at interest in Garza, and Joe Maddon has said through the St. Petersburg Times that Matt Garza will be pitching for them next year.

We'll have to see if that's true or not.

Good because I'd rather not trade any prospects for such a player, given the Cubs current stock on pitchers in house.

Why not just go after Grienke and up the ante a little? I think between Wells and Gorgz you could get some pieces to help send over in a deal to the Royals.

Grienke

Zambrano

Dempster

Webb ?

Silva/Cashner/Shark/Coleman

Not sure where Levine is coming up with his info. since he seems to be the only one hot on this rumor, but found the following snippet at the bottom of recent article from Verducci of SI discussing the Crawford signing......

The Cubs inquired about pitcher Matt Garza from the Rays, but when Tampa Bay asked about Colvin and Sean Marshall, the talks went nowhere

There's a guy on the espn boards who said he heard on Tampa radio that Garza has been traded for Cashner, Lee and one of the catching prospects.

I wouldn't take that rumor for anything. But the amount of backlash on here would be huge if thats true.

Sounds like a very reliable source.

It's probably true. Tampa likes to get overly compensated on anyone they trade, and Hendry is the kind of guy to fall right into that trap.

I got an idea. Lets trade them Lee, marmol, and some other low level chap for Garza. Then, lets trade them Garza for HellBoy.

No it doesn't - but I'm sure many on these boards would like to hear it anyway.

Hendry's MO is that he never gives up any prospects he values in a trade (whether that's a good quality of his or a bad one is open to interpretation). He's one of the least likely GM's in the league to give up multiple top prospects in a deal.

Can we please trade Colvin this offseason... I don't care if it's this deal or somewhere else... but I don't think his value is going to get any higher than whatever it is right now.

You can't trade Colvin and still start him in RF every day. So no.

In previous years, he had tons of money to throw at people to improve his club. He doesn't have that this year, and that I think he's a poor decision maker in general, I don't trust him to not give up that much talent for someone like Garza.

I do like Garza and I would love to see him added to the rotation. If Hendry can get him without giving up too much in talent, I'll owe him an apology. Considering there are other teams interested and Hendry is winning the most interest, and considering what Tampa expects to be paid, I'm not comfortable with this.

Isn't Lee supposed to be some sort of uber-prospect, or am I mistaken?

He's supposed to be good enough with the glove to move Castro to 2nd when he's major league ready. I'm not sure how his bat projects at this point, however.

The Scott Kazmir-Victor Zambrano trade was like 7 years and an awful GM ago.

Well, I wouldn't say "uber" but he's definitely a damn good prospect. Probably won't make BA's top 100 list this year, but he'll be 20 years old and starting next year in Daytona. Which means he'll probably make it for the following year, assuming he has a solid year.

He's got a great arm, great range, and projects to be a much better fielder than Castro at SS(who's been projected to wind up very solid in his own right). He's more of a slap hitter and he K's too much right now, but hits the ball with authority on occasion and he has a decent walk rate as well. He also has excellent speed.

I'd say his upside is that of a .350-.360 OBP, 10ish homers and 40-50 steals, while playing a GG caliber SS.

Think I'd rather leave Castro at SS and get a bat at 2B.

Easier said than done.
