oh man that would be hilarious if pinkel and anderson just had a temper tantrum and quit because the school left the big xii for another conference.

You'd be hard pressed to find either of them throw a temper tantrum. Wouldn't surprise me to see Pinkel retire earlier than he intended if Mizzou were to move to the Big 10. Anderson would be able to land a job at a major basketball program, and while he may have no interest in it now, I could see him pursuing it more if Mizzou switched.

But yes, lolz temper tantrums.

Why would Anderson leave? The Big Tweleven would be a much better basketball conference than the current Big 12 which you'd think would increase Missouri hoops' potential for big things.

Maybe, but I think if Anderson wanted to coach in the Big Ten, he would've chosen to do so when he was leaving UAB.

But I digress. In the end it's going to be about money anyways, and if the administration decides they want the money, our sports programs, most of which are reaching new levels in terms of success, will struggle for quite some time in my opinion. Anyways, it doesn't matter, we'll see what happens. Obviously I'd prefer to stay in the Big 12, but it's not like a conference change is going to affect my fandom at all.

You think the guy chooses which conference he wants to coach in over which team he wants to coach for?

I'd say that conference has an impact, yes. The team is obviously the top choice but things like history, conference, rivalries, etc., all go into the persona of that team.

Yeah, I'm sure it plays a role, but you were implying that he chose which conference to coach in rather than which team. The biggest determination is going to be money.

If we add a 12th school, do we become the Big 12 Part II? Or Big 12 squared?

I didn't read the first 13 pages, am I the first person to make that lame joke?

Bigger 12

There are rumors spreading on the scout.com boards about Pitt being announced as the 12th school soon. Nobody really seems to have a source for this information other than word of mouth gossip though.

I really think it would be a bad move for Pitt to enter the Big Ten. In the Big East, they can recruit kids from NYC, DC, and other places out east. Kids from the East coast will have more opportunity to play in front of friends and family, either in person or on TV. A kid from NYC could play basketball in front of family when Pitt plays at home, at St Johns, Syracuse, UConn, or Georgetown, etc without much travel time. But not going to get a lot of family going from NYC to Wisconsin for a game.

That could hurt their recruiting. Admittedly though, it hasn't really hurt Penn St's recruiting in football.

What kid from NYC is going to play in front of family at Syracuse or Georgetown? You might as well be in Ohio. In theory that could hurt recruiting, but would it in reality? Iowa football has been getting multiple kids from NJ for decades now. Why? I have no idea. Supposedly some coach who worked under Fry had ties with NJ, but anyway, that was in the 80's and they were getting kids to go from NJ to freaking Iowa. Nobody was watching Hawkeyes games on TV back then. Granted it was the Big Ten and there really wasn't any meaningful east coast college football then. But I think most kids get recruited based on where they will be playing their home games, not based on potential road trips.

Not following the point you are trying to make? Those are both 4 hour drives (give or take 30 mins) depending on where you are in NYC.

My point is just that they are very far from NYC, so potential games being played there for family to come watch isn't all that enticing. Guys choose colleges based on where they want to be, and what is the best way to take the next stop, not for the most road games that allow mom and dad to show up.

You don't think that factors in....all else being equal?

Not for recruits that matter.

If it factors in, it's small. Home games probably matter, but I can't see a team losing recruits because they will be facing Big Ten competition rather than Big East.

If not Notre Dame, the Big Ten is going to go after Texas or Florida. I'm usually laughed at when I say that. However, this is pretty compelling:

Average TV revenue (per Outside the Lines):

* Big Ten: $242 million ($22 million per school)

* SEC: $205 million ($17.08 million per school)

* Big 12: $78 million ($6.5 million per school)

* ACC: $67 million ($5.58 million per school)

* Pac-10: $58 million ($5.8 million per school)

* Big East: $13 million for football/$20 million for basketball ($2.8 million per football school)

Still don't think Texas would listen?

Texas was interested in joining the Big Ten for a while until recently. They want a higher profile as a top public research institution and their faculty was very much in favor of it. I'm a little surprised they want to explore it right now considering the fact that they're in the middle of a rather successful athletic stretch right now.

If I was Jim Delany, Texas would be #1 on my list. They were brought up a month or two ago, but I don't believe anyone thought that Texas would have any interest.

The implications of any Big Ten expansion would be big. The implications of Texas joining the Big Ten would be enormous.
