The Austin American Statesman seems to think the Texas to the Big 10 thing is a Big 10 pipedream.

I'll put this as succinctly as possible: Texas isn't joining the Big Ten. No way, no how. So put down your Ohio State pompoms and that JoePa pennant...I've been assured by higher-ups at Texas that this is nothing more than a wishlist on the Big Ten's part. As one school official said, "We're the good-looking girl at the dance." Another even higher up the food chain told me, "It ain't going to happen."

As for the Big 12 protecting KU more than Texas, that doesn't make a lot of sense. The conference alignment is based on geography, not some sneaky attempt to put KU in the softest division possible. And the basketball tournament, which was always in KC, now rotates between three locations. (Which is fair, but it doesn't support KU getting preferential treatment.) There are a bunch of other points to support that the power is in the south (and Texas), not the least of which is the fact the conference office is in freaking Texas.

Besides, why would they protect KU hoops over Texas? I'm sure UT makes way more money for the conference.

KU hoops is the "franchise" though. The Big 12 oughta just drop the cup cakes and go to a longer schedule like the Big Ten did.

yeah that only made sense if you're someone who has an irrational hatred of kansas basketball.

I really don't hate Kansas basketball, I think its a tick over rated historically, but still elite. Only hate their crazy side of the fan base.

I'm a big fan of as many conferences as possible playing 18 league games in basketball.

As much as I complain about the Big Ten Network, what a incredible success that network has been. Jim Delaney should be knighted.

What's there to complain about? You get to see every Big Ten basketball game, all football games, everything is in HD and this year they've really stepped up their programming during the week. The nightly shows during football season were fantastic.

The only negative is that it causes some poor start times.

Tom Hamilton, Thom Brennaman and Mike Hall.

That and charging for the online streams. It was bad enough that I had to watch some games on a shitty feed on my laptop, but now they charge 3 bucks per game.

Don't get me wrong, it's great to have nearly every Big Ten football/basketball game available, but in case you didn't notice, I like complaining.

Apparently Texas is out.

Dodds said Texas would be a natural target for any league because of the school's strong academics, athletics and the power to draw a large television audience. But Texas and the Big 12 are good for each other, Dodds said, adding "It's working. I like it."

Not sure I believe it as he said that there have been no talks. I think if talks were initiated his tune would probably change. He said he doesn't think there would be a domino effect which I think is pretty naive.

I love that they committed to doing EVERYTHING in HD. Women's soccer? Track & Field? Penn State vs. Northwestern baseball? Yup, HD

Yeah, I really like that too. Even the early season matchups in football, against really small teams -- they get the HD cameras out there and shoot it. The game might be on one of the alternate channels, but it is there, and it's HD.

They had many doubters when they first started, so there was much to overcome. They've done a pretty good job. I can't say I watch a ton of it, but I do like having it in my channel lineup.

I'm guessing the Big Ten women's soccer coaches put the kibosh on inviting Texas.

Interesting.

Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick says the possible expansion of the Big Ten could create changes in major college football that force the Fighting Irish to give up their football independence.

While Notre Dame prefers to remain independent in football, Swarbrick says, he and university president Rev. John Jenkins will evaluate whatever changes occur and assess how they effect the Fighting Irish.

Notre Dame's dumbing down of the football schedule in recent years, the asinine 7-4-1 format, and everything else has some fans actually believing that ND is conspiring to make conference membership not seem so bad or seem inevitable (even though it's not - ND could be playing good schedules year in year out if they wanted to).

It seems far-fetched but everything they've done recently - especially these 'statements' - is creepy.

doesn't take 3000 posts to read this thread and not agree that fire and Purdue are the two most successful inventions in world history or whatever it was you said.

Derwood and OMC should really let the Big Ten know how stupid they're being looking at ND and Texas.

why would I think it's stupid?

The Notre Dame ship has sailed. They have like 6 years left on their TV contract. Yes, they'd probably make more money in the Big Ten (who has deals with ESPN, ABC and CBS) but I doubt NBC lets them out. Plus, as I've said, they've rejected the league twice already, so [expletive] them.

Texas? LOL

Is academics a problem? I wasn't aware ND's academics weren't good enough for the Big Ten.

If anything would be a problem I'd expect ND's Catholic affiliation would be.
