Texas wasn't dragging them along when the SWC fell apart and they looked towards the Big Ten and Pac 10

ETA: And I'd rather have A&M than most of the other candidates.

Why can't aTm be an out of conference game?

I don't think it's a rivalry thing.

Last time around the congressman in Texas sort of handcuffed A&M to UT and made them a package deal to the Big 12. Texas was ready to move on without them. Yeah its not the rivalry game UT/OU is. If things were to blow up I think Texas would prefer the Big 10 over everyone. Then the Pac 10 after that. From what I have read they don't care for the SEC and the SEC doesn't want Texas as they would want higher academics standards from the other schools.

The Texas lawmakers wanted them to drag Houston and TCU with them as well(And the Big 12 was ready to oblige). Texas told them no.

I don't see what has changed since the formation of the Big 12 that would require Texas to drag along little brother if they weren't going to when they approached the Big Ten in '94.

Yeah, I don't like this very much. All I wanted was one team to make it 12, then do a conference championship at the end of the year.

I understand it's all about cash though.

I still like the regional nature of the college conferences. Super conferences -- seems to me it will sort of wipe that out a bit.

The big east already stretches in a big triangle from Wisconsin to Florida and back up to New England. Adding Texas to the Big 10 really wouldn't be unprecedented.

To be fair, that is only in basketball, where the Big East adds a bunch of non-football schools.

Seton Hall football: undefeated since 1981.

A guy on one of the Texas boards who is allegedly somewhat clued in says that if the Big 10 poaches MU and NU, Texas would try to engineer a new conference that melds much of the Big 12 with the PAC 10.

He says it would look something like this:

West:

* USC

* UCLA

* Stanford

* Cal

* Oregon

* Oregon State

* Washington

* Utah

East:

* Texas

* Texas A&M

* Oklahoma

* Kansas

* Colorado

* Arizona

* Arizona State

* BYU, Texas Tech or Iowa State

I have a hard time seeing the PAC-10 just dumping wazzu like that. I also don't know why Texas Tech or ISU would be a consideration, but Okie State wouldn't. Personally, I'd try to fit UNLV into the mix somehow, since Vegas is a good sized market.

If the Big Ten adding teams is going to cause a radical realignment of BCS conferences I don't know if I like it as much as I thought.

Plus no one has figured out how we are going to put Purdue and Indiana in separate divisions for fairness sake.

I have a hard time seeing Stanford or Cal signing off on that conference.

why? because of the lower academic standards of the Big 12 schools (minus UT)?

The SEC commish has said he doesn't want any new Big 16 conference or whatever to upstage his own, so that means the SEC would be expanding as well. Perhaps he'd want to try and raid Texas and Texas A&M maybe? With Mizzou and Nebraska going to Bigwhatever and Colorado likely going to PAC-10, the Big 12 is truly on the verge of being a crap conference save for the monsters. Of course the Big 12 could try and add TCU, Utah, maybe Boise? I dunno. I doubt the Texas to SEC would ever happen though.

The SEC could also try and get Miami and Florida State. Georgia Tech and Clemson could also be possibilities.

Mostly. I don't think they'd be too keen on either campus to open up to midwestern states like Kansas or Oklahoma, let alone allowing the Mormons in.

It's long been rumored that Stanford shot down Texas's admission back in '94. Granted things have changed with regards to expansion, but I can't see that things have progressed that much to go from that to allowing in even half those schools.

Everything I've heard suggests the SEC would be low on Texas's list. I haven't heard why, just that it would be behind the Pac-10 and Big 10.

I think FSU and Miami to the SEC would be far more likely.

because they might lose more often 8-)

honestly though, I don't really see the incentive for Texas to leave a conference that pretty much already revolves around them (and Okie to an extent).

I agree with that. FSU and Miami are fairly realistic possibilities if the SEC looks to expand, and I think Virginia Tech would also be worth a call. USF would also be an interesting prospect, but would be much lower on the list.

From a purely football standpoint, I'd love to see the SEC pursue Georgia Tech (giving us the UGA/GT in-conference rivalry and the potential for a UT/GT rivalry). The SEC already has a strong hold on the Atlanta market, though.

Because Indiana football makes more money than them.
