i'd have a hard time coming up with a third cub in the top 20. it seems like almora should have fallen out, alcantara doesn't have a high enough ceiling, soler has hardly played, and schwarber is too new.

It's pretty clear Parks has Alcantara in the top 20. My only question is he saying Soler isn't top 40? Does he have Almora there instead?

Yeah, he hasn't liked Soler much, even before what has happened this year. He's wrong, but he's been consistent on that, IIRC.

he's "wrong" to not be super high on a guy that has played in like 60 games the last two seasons?

you guys are pathetic with your obsession over this guy.

Tyler Skulina has been pitching with knee tendinitis, which apparently explains his velocity drop: http://beaconnews.suntimes.com/sports/28421106-419/minor-league-baseball-cougars-feel-incredible-with-hulking-tyler-skulina-on-the-mound.html#.U7RFBDd5mc1

Skulina hasn’t even been entirely healthy has he has put together his solid campaign. He is suffering from some tendinitis in his left knee, which is the knee he lands on. That has sapped his fastball velocity of late and caused him to get a two-week break from starting.

“I’m just battling through it and keep competing on the mound,” Skulina said. “My body is probably making adjustments without me even knowing it to take the pain away. I’d like to be around 92, 93 consistently. It’s been around 88, 89, 90 lately.

“I just need to get it up there a little bit more. It will come eventually.”

Rosario knows that even if it’s subconscious, the knee is preventing Skulina from letting it rip at full speed.

“When you have a knee problem on the front side, you’re going to be a little bit afraid to land and put all that weight on the front leg and let the ball go,” Rosario said. “It’s tough for him to deal with all of that at the same time he’s throwing. I saw him up to 95, 96 last year.”

BP did a re-draft of the 2011 draft: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=24059

Jose Fernandez went from 14 to 1, Javier Baez went at 2, no other Cub was picked and the Cubs got Archie Bradley at 9.

So that was Hendry's last draft and the one draft we were allowed to go nuts with spending before the CBA changes. And it got us the one superduper prospect that we would have gotten even without financial freedom (at least in terms of top 32 players from the draft and of course acknowledging that is still time for players to grow)

Overslotting lost its effectiveness as more teams started doing it, and it was always a bit overrated to begin with. By 2011, you weren't getting a whole lot of competitive advantage by blowing up your draft spending.

I agree for the most part, but it's not like Soler is a pitcher that has had a torn rotator cuff. He's missed games for a variety of crazy reasons (bat wielding, multiple hamstrings, dislocated shoulder I believe). And when he has played, he's been pretty good. But I have no problem with someone not liking the guy that much.

Parks or Soler?

parks, obviously. there are probably more mentions of that dork on this board than soler.

i'm not even one of the anti-parks guys.

i just think he's very wrong on soler (who he has been relatively down on even prior to this year). for one, he has major issues with his approach at the plate, which is actually one of his biggest strengths and one of the things i find most encouraging about his future.

especially since he's relatively high on almora.

@CSNMooney: Cubs GM Hoyer on Alcantara: “Everyone talks about the Core Four reports and stuff like that. I think he certainly belongs in that group.”

Bruce writes about Hoyer talking AA.

"He's only 22. He's a switch hitter. He's in Triple-A, and no one talks about him because of Baez and Bryant and Almora. He has a chance to have a pretty special year in Triple-A when you look at his doubles, triples, homers and stolen bases. Guys only don't really do that today. We're excited for him. He's on the (40-man) roster, which his nice for us. I'm not going to answer yes or no whether he'd come up at some point, but certainly he's opened our eyes with the year he's had."

I assume that's Bryant at 3, Baez at 5, Russell at 6 and Alcantara at 18:

@ProfessorParks: Addison Russell will rank #6 overall on the upcoming #BPTop50. That would give the #Cubs the #3, #5, #6, and #18 best prospects in MiLB.

BA's midseason top 50 will have 2) Bryant, 5) Russell and 7) Baez.

Of all the prospects, the one that intrigues me the most is Soler. Just want to see him healthy and get at bats consistently

I agree, I honestly think that if he stays healthy he's our safest of the big/impact prospects.

Which is just insane. It could be argued that Soler is like our 7th best prospect. How many organizations would kill to have him as their top guy?

In terms of pure offensive ceiling, Soler was number 1. Baez has it in terms of position, overall value and the like:

Soler doesn't have the highest offensive ceiling of our prospects.

funny enough, when BP did their 2012 re-draft they had russell as the player the cubs picked at #6 (so the 6th best player, at this time, from the draft). top 5 were zunino, buxton, correa, gausman, wacha. almora was #14.
