What exactly in there was remotely stupid?

Edit: NM, thought you were calling THESE comments stupid.

I took that to mean the extremely high praise of Russell makes the NYDN column look even more out of touch.

He's saying that the commentary about how good Russell is makes the Daily News article (which claims the Yankees could have easily beat the deal) look even worse than before.

Poor Castro is so undervalued. Everything they're affixing to Russell - Castro already is those things. Three time all star at 24yo.

Don't worry, Parks will be slobbering all over him in the offseason when he pulls up his baseball reference page for the first time in 18 months. "Why didn't anybody tell me he was good again," he'll say to his cardboard cutout of screech from saved by the bell.

Balki (Chicago): With the recent acquisition of the Addison Russel, Billy McKinney and Dan Straily do the Cubs now have the best farm in the league?

Jason Parks on the Top 50: Pretty good case; nobody can touch their impact bats; depth is obviously improving but it had a long way to go. I think Cubs and Twins are the two alphas of the minor league systems.

i can't think of a reasonable argument to rank the twins ahead of the cubs. the twins have a really nice system, but their best two prospects have basically had a lost year of development. as for depth, yeah the cubs' system had a long way to go when the new management took over, but now they're at a position where players like p. johnson, tseng, edwards, torres, jiminez, rivero, vizcaino, etc are hard-pressed to make the top 10. not only do they have the best position prospects (a safer bet than pitchers), but they probably have the strongest depth of any minor league system.

Speaking of depth, TIL Skulina has been pitching with left knee tendinitis, which affects how hard he can land and the velocity with which he can throw. He's been at 88-90 this year, compared to sitting 92-93 and hitting 95-96 last year, according to this article.

It'll be interesting to see what he looks like when the knee heals up. He's been pretty good so far.

The most worthwhile Jesse Rogers article you will ever read: http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago/cubs/post/_/id/25627/adjustments-paying-off-for-surging-baez

Baez was hitless in 13 of Iowa's first 23 games and the home runs weren't coming as easily as they did last year when he hit 37. A slow start turned into a slow first half.

"I couldn't get to the outside fastball," he said. "I was leaning back. We saw some video and I fixed it. My mind was looking fastballs in, which I don't have to do. I can just react to that."

Ramirez added: "His power is better than mine at that age, and he's a really good fielder. Wow."

"We have Mendy (Alcantara) leading off, then one batter later they got me then after a another batter they have Kris Bryant," Baez said. "They're going to have to pitch to one of us. I'm pretty sure one of us three is going to have a good game every day."

ugh look at him blatantly disregarding those other guys in between. not a team player.

@ESPNChiCubs: Kris Bryant: "I never want to go up to the plate looking for a walk. I feel like walks happen. My job is to put damage on the ball."

@ESPNChiCubs: More Bryant : "Along with that comes the strikeouts. You have to give something to get something."

Keither Law did a breakdown of the Futures Game and listed the best tools among all the players. I don't have Insider but the preview before the pay wall he declared Joey Gallo as having the power power of the bunch. Anyone with Insider see if he mentioned Bryant or Baez?

Best power

Joey Gallo, 3B, Texas: There's a ton of power in this year's Futures Game, with Gallo leading the way. He has enormous left-handed pull power, comparable to Giancarlo Stanton's, producing 93 homers already in 254 professional games, 31 this year. The U.S. team alone has at least four players with grade-70 power or more: Gallo, Kris Bryant, Peter O'Brien and Bell, with Peterson and Seager also more than capable of putting on a show in BP. The World team's best power bats include Jorge Alfaro, Stephen Moya, Maikel Franco and Gabriel Guerrero.

Wow. Did he really not mention Javier Baez as one of the best power bats for the World Team? That seems like a very egregious error

he probably just forgot about him, but knowing law, he'll play it off like he didn't. he'll probably even use it to troll cubs fans.

Kyle Schwarber, C/LF, Cubs (Low-A Kane County)

I’ve seen the Cubs’ first round draft pick a few times at Low-A. At the plate he sets up in a low crouch with an open stance, his hands even with his shoulders and extended out away from his body. He has a simple load and takes a quick, efficient route to the ball and displays good swing plane for power. I didn’t see power in game but he barreled up a few pitches for hard line drives. His nose is always on the ball as he displays an advanced feel for tracking stuff. He spat on a few good changeups that lesser hitters would’ve swung over and he shows a solid understanding of the strike zone. Behind the plate, Schwarber sets up low in his crouch and stays quiet, creating a comfortable target for the pitcher. His framing skills could use some work, as he stabs at offerings. He has surprising mobility back there with good lateral movement on block attempts. I’ve noticed that he gets loose fundamentally late in games. He has an average arm and I did get a pop time in the 1.9 range but ultimately the catching skills are fringe and can improve. I don’t think the cost is worth delaying the bat. He’s a bat-first left fielder in my mind. —Mauricio Rubio

Christian Villanueva, 3B, Cubs (Tennessee, AA): 2-4, R, HR. Villanueva was struggling in his first taste of Triple-A this season, which made it easy to send him down a level to make room for Kris Bryant. Still, Villanueva is a legitimate prospect in his own right who gets overshadowed in the Cubs system. He's getting back on his feet in Tennessee and will get another shot at Triple-A soon.

Jorge Soler, OF, Cubs (Tennessee, AA): 3-5, 2 R, 2 HR, 2 K. At some point recently, I was asked why we at BP had “given up” on Soler. I assure you that we have not, and games like this point to why. After missing the majority of the first half with a hamstring injury, Soler has come back with a vengeance and is terrorizing the Southern League. His power potential further complicates the future for the Cubs, in the best way possible.

Jeimer Candelario, 3B, Cubs (Kane County, A-): 2-5, 3 R, 2 HR, 2 BB. Not all of the Cubs prospects can dominate, and Candelario is one that has struggled this season, warranting a demotion back to the Midwest League. He struggled with Florida State League pitching, but at just 20, there’s plenty of time for him to get straightened out.

Jen-Ho Tseng, RHP, Cubs (Kane County, A-): 7 IP, 3 H, R, 0 BB, 7 K. Tseng is extremely refined for a 19-year-old and it’s showing against raw Low-A hitters. His command of four pitches is simply more than that level can handle.

2. But Vas sidekick Kris Bryant is also extremely talented, but a different kind of player. The Jayson Werth comp as an athlete is valid, and one Cubs scouting official says “I thought Kris was a really good center fielder in college.” Bryant loves the outfield, and if Addison Russell or Javier Baez moves to third, Bryant could be a really good right fielder.

3. Baez, incidentally, is said to have become a different player since he formed his relationship with Manny Ramirez. The way he appeared to look for Lucas Giolito’s curveball away and hit it out to right field was vintage Manny.

Problem solved:

LF: Schwarber

CF: Bryant

RF: Soler

he did play some CF in college:

http://web.usabaseball.com/article.jsp?ymd=20130319&content_id=42969178&vkey=news_gsa

At 6-foot-5, 215 pounds, Bryant has serious leverage in his right-handed swing, and he has become better at handling fastballs in on his hands. But he also runs very well for his size, and he has showcased his defensive versatility by playing first base, center field and right field along with his usual third base.

"For me, that's my favorite thing about Kris is just the athleticism," Hill said. "This is a 6-foot-5, wiry, athletic guy that, someday, he has Gold Glove right fielder defensively written on him. And I think he could do the same thing at first base. He could play third base in a pinch in the big leagues, and center field at the college level very well. He can throw somebody out at the plate, he can steal a base. All these things are just emerging -- the athleticism, arm strength, power. Now you put the hitting ability, not just power but using all fields, power to all fields, not striking out.
