What did Fonenot just do? Try to steal third?

I'm watching on Gameday and have no clue.

ball went between catcher's legs. Fontenot thought it went to the backstop because the catcher was having trouble but it was actually right behind the catcher who threw Fontenot out at third.

Omg, I'm sure Fontenot realizes how dumb this is after the fact but wow...here are all the things he did wrong:

-created the first out of the inning at 3rd base

-tried to take 3rd base while representing one of the tying runs in the game, but still down by 3

Theres something else he did too but I'm too mad to remember.

Ball bounced away from Ianetta and Fontenot tried to advance, because apparently 2 run homers are more meaningful in his eyes than 3 run homers.

He got a bad jump. He also may not have paid any attention to the 3b coach, but that's just speculation on my part.

If Fontenot thought it went to the backstop and so could take 3rd easily and have Johnson right behind him, then it makes sense to take 3rd (to stay out of the DP that Soto grounded into).

Unfortunately Fontenot read it wrong while Johnson read it correctly. The sad part is that if either one of them had reversed (Fontenot reading it correctly or Johnson also reading it wrong) the Cubs would still be batting.

The problem is you don't go to 3rd if you think it went, you have to know it went. You can't mess around with so few outs and such little value in going from 2nd to 3rd. There was just nothing to gain there.

So we went from 2 on and nobody out to somehow leaving no men on base while not scoring?

Fontenot got gunned going to 3rd. Soto grounded into a game ending DP.

Exactly. If it was safe to go, Soto would have waived them to go.

Oh, definitely agreed. I'm just saying there is a situation there where taking 3rd is the correct move. But you have to be absolutely sure, and it's a really bad mistake when you're wrong like Fontenot was.

However, I'm not sure why Soto didn't motion for them to stay.

That may be one of the stupidest baserunning blunders of all-time. Seriously how do you make the first out of an inning at 3rd when the tying run is at the plate in the bottom of the 9th?
